Opened in 1923, this Cali-Mex institution is known for its green-corn tamales & costumed waiters.- Google
"This is one of the great Mexican restaurants in LA."
"The green corn tamales are just as good as people say they are."

If you want some authentic Los Angeles Mexican food this is the place. This is one of the oldest running Mexican restaurants chains in L.A. and they show you why with their delicious food and drinks. I had a L.A. lemonade margarita which had a generous pour of 1800 in the glass. Definitely had a little bit of a buzz after only one drink which is something I can appreciate. For food I ate the sonora style enchilada which was first enchilada served at El Cholo back in 1923 so you know the restaurant has a strong history of serving good food. The staff was open and friendly and the food was served quick and fresh.

El Cholo is a Los Angeles institution since 1923. If you don't like it, perfect, more room at the bar. The guacamole molcajete is the best guac in town. On Tuesdays it's happy hour all night long, which includes half-off top shelf tequila shots like Don Julio 1942 and many other respectables. Framed photos and plaques on the walls document the long history of this delicious establishment. They invented Mexican-American fare, come taste where it all started.

This place has some really great Blue Corn Enchiladas! Definitely the best I've ever had. Although the blue corn is DELISH, I'm not a fan of neither the tortilla soup nor the sadly watery "salsa." It's also on the overpriced side, considering both location and cuisine type.

Mexican food is one of my favorite cuisines and it is so easy for so many places to get it so wrong. El Cholo's does not do that. Every dish served is full of flavor and there is always something new and creative on the menu. Often, the PERFECT blend of traditional and trendy. The atmosphere is upscale but also authentic - unlike the chain joints with the donkey at the front door or the trendy Studio City joints with bamboo at the register. Service is fantastic and guarantee that on your second or third trip they will remember your name. And now, we have not even got to the margaritas. They've been voted the best in LA and there are blends for every taste. For those of us who like the finer tequilas, El Cholo has a wide selection. And all their mixers are made from scratch, not the syrupy-sugary crap most place serve.

This historic restaurant is a Los Angeles institution. I've been a few times, but recently took some out-of-town friends here to try the margaritas and guacamole, which is prepared fresh at your table. The waitstaff is very attentive (they refilled my water without me asking several times), and the menu is very fun, with the year the dish was introduced next to the item on the menu. I had a steak plate and the food was excellent. If you're looking to experience a slice of Los Angeles history, look no further. #fallforLA

A trip to LA is not complete without a visit to El Cholo. One of the best places to eat.

My El Cholo mean just isn't the same anywhere except for at this original El Cholo. This authentic Mexican restaurant also offers you a glimpse of Los Angeles from the 1930's to today through the photos on the wall. My favorite time of the year at El Cholo is from May-October because of the Green Corn Tamales. I also love the fresh guacamole, the Cadillac margarita and all of the enchiladas.
