In response to critiques: saw her in Atlanta in late 60s and early 70s: between those two performances she traveled to Africa and became vocal about her anger at America. It was reflected in her less musical and therefore less entertaining second performance. But then, I heard a lot of hippy-trippy-trailing out to nowhere performances in the 70s as the Movement got battered. Our energies were spent. We wanted to reinvent ourselves. That's what I hear in her performance. It took me a while as an audience member not to take it personally.
