The importance of having an active spine

While we all know that being active is good for our physical and mental health, it's important to be aware that getting active and staying active can help keep your spine healthy too!

Did you know that 90% of stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated from movement of the spine?

The alignment of our spine is important, as it’s the spine that protects our spinal cord, which is a bundle of nerves that runs down the middle of your back and carries signals back and forth between your body and your brain. If there is a disruption to this information being carried then this may lead to symptoms, such as back and neck aches. The healthier our spines are, the healthier our body and brain will be.

The good news is that being active doesn’t necessarily mean hitting the gym five times a week, there are simple steps you can take to keep flexible, stretching regularly is great, as well as walking. How about taking the stairs instead of the lift, or parking further away, or less screen time?

Sitting on a wobble cushion or a yoga ball is also a good way to keep those core stomach muscles active and it'll help with your balance and tone your tummy - so you are doing your body good, even while sitting down. This is one of the reasons before getting adjusted at Summit we encourage our clients to sit on the wobble cushion to loosen the spine, making adjustments even more effective!

Spreading the word...
Did you know that we provide free spine checks for family members and friends? If you know of someone who would benefit from being checked please let us know.

World Health Day: The Year of Depression

Summit Chiropractic Clinic

As Chiropractors, it’s not uncommon for our clients to come to us feeling depressed or low because they’ve been in pain or discomfort for a long time. So, this year we are supporting World Health Day on 7th April campaign to raise awareness and remove the stigma around depression.

It is reported that one in five people become depressed at some point in their lives, so it’s highly likely that if you’ve not experienced depression, you will know a family member or friend who has.

Anyone can have the odd day or week of feeling in low spirits or unhappy but someone who is suffering from depression the feelings don’t go away quickly and it affects your everyday life. Sometimes there may be an obvious reason why someone becomes to feel depressed – a relationship breakdown, a bereavement or even the birth of a child – but it often isn’t clear at all and can go unrecognised (including by the person who is experiencing it).

Unlike our organs, skeletal and nervous system, there are no two people who will have the same mind, memories, thoughts and feelings. People might have different symptoms, patterns and ways of managing their feelings and this can often include concealing their feelings from friends and family, so how do you recognise depression?

You will notice:

persistent sadness or low mood
not being able to enjoy things
losing interest in life
finding it harder to make decisions
not coping with things that used to be easy
feeling exhausted
feeling restless and agitated
loss of appetite and weight
difficulties getting to sleep
loss of sex drive
thoughts of self-harm or suicide
The most important thing not to do is suffer with depression in silence. As the old saying goes 'a problem shared is a problem halved' and there is research that has found that stress levels are significantly reduced when the people can vocalise how they feel.

If you think that it’s likely a friend or family member is stressed or depressed, listen to them, but try not to judge them and only offer advice they ask for it but if you can see the problem that is behind the depression, you could work with the person to find a solution. It can help by writing down the problem and then try to think of the things you could do to tackle it, pick the best actions and see if they work.

If a problem is that they are experiencing headaches, back or neck pain, then it may be that chiropractic care could help them. Find out more about how we work here.

To coincide with World Health Day, we will be offering free posture checks from 10am - 2pm. Please call us today on 01923 236162 to book your slot.

New Year, New You: Summit Chiropractic Clinics Top 5 Tips for a Healthy Spine in 2017

Having and maintaining a good posture is a major step in preventing back pain and, whilst no one is immune from pain, there are some simple things you can do to promote a better posture and help reduce the risk of back pain.

And Stretch. Stretching regularly has many benefits, not only does it increase flexibility and the range of motion but can also prevent injuries, improves posture and relieves stress.

Sit Straight. After sitting around over the festive period we have all probably slumped more than usual, try to improve your posture by sitting up straight and stand up regularly to allow enough space for our organs to function properly.

Eat Green. Eating lots of greens, kale and spinach helps strengthen your bones, particularly if you eat them daily.

Smile Often. The connection between our minds and body is stronger than we realise. Many of us get the post-Christmas blues, so instead of spending time feeling down, take time out of your day to do something that is different and fun, start to read a new book, go for brisk walk or try mediation to help your nervous system.

See a Chiropractor. Lots of people will see a chiropractic doctor for back, neck or joint problems, while others may seek pain relief from other discomforts such as migraines or insomnia. Sports people often will see a Chiropractor, not just for injuries but as part of a regular commitment to helping them reach their peak performance.

Chiropractic Care is as much about prevention, as it is pain relief and it's also suitable for any ages, from babies to older people.

You do not need to wait until pain strikes to see a Chiropractor.

Check out our Birthday Bonanza Special Offer for new clients which includes an initial consultation, spinal exam, X-Rays (if deemed clinically necessary), report findings and two complimentary appointments for £115. This voucher must be used by 24 January 2017.

Call 01923 236 162 today to take advantage of this great offer!

Did you ever wonder why certain families are so healthy while others seem to rent space at their GPs? Healthy families do healthy things. Healthy families find a way to minimise and manage the effects of stress by engaging in a proactive health approach.

These families spend time together doing physical activities such as going for bike rides, playing sports, running, etc. They also eat for health by seeking out the best foods and by going out of their way to reduce chemical exposure. They may choose organic grass fed beef, free range organic chicken, choose to avoid genetically modified food sources, and eat organic fruits and vegetables, to name a few. These healthy practices allow these families to be healthy and have strong immune systems. The best cure for sickness is to stay healthy.

The healthiest families we have seen are the ones that take it a step further. Not only do these families do everything we just mentioned, they also understand that physical stress was there from day one and continues to accumulate everyday due to repetitive stress and acute injuries. These families get chiropractic check-ups regularly in order to detect subluxations and nerve interference, and get adjusted routinely.

What we have found tends to stop parents from getting their children checked by a chiropractor is fear and/or skepticism. Fear that chiropractic may hurt their child or fear that other family members may question their choice to take their child to get checked. You may be surprised to here that the pressure used to help babies is the same to check the ripeness of a tomato - chiropractic for babies is very safe, gentle and effective. Maybe you did know that we have looked after babies as young as just a couple of days old? This leads us into skepticism; skepticism that why would your child need to be checked in the first place? Something you may not know is that you can have a health problem and nerve interference without having any symptoms. The only way to know is to have a thorough examination by a chiropractor. To have no symptoms does not mean that everything is ok. Consider the trauma a newborn goes through in order to descend into the birth canal and finally exit. Perhaps even a C-section or a forceps delivery is needed, increasing the amount of stress on the child. Consider as well all the falls a child will have while learning to walk as well as the traumas involved in physical activity—be it from sports, dance, music or kids being kids. It is no wonder we grow to have symptoms in adulthood.

This could have been the case with you and it could be true for other members of your family. When you have subluxations, your health potential is affected and future problems are inevitable. Now that you understand chiropractic and its role, it’s time to get your entire family checked. Ignorance is not always bliss but knowledge is always power. Your family deserves to be healthy and that starts with a chiropractic check up! This Summer we are offering free checks for all children!

Remember, you cannot get healthy with the same attitude that created your sickness!

Yours in Health

Life is what you make it
What are some of the traits we think of when we think of successful people? Hard work, discipline, passion, commitment, tenacity, enthusiasm, communication, charisma. The most successful people in any field have these traits written in their DNA! Every aspect of their lives have to be in congruency with these traits. One thing we may forget or may not have considered is…..PERSPECTIVE.
Perspective can allow you to turn any situation from negative to some form of positive, or an already positive to an even higher level. Many people who encounter positive experiences in life can be paralysed by them. For example, a great time in business or work, relationships, or health then leads to us taking our foot off the gas and coasting for a while. The need to enjoy the fruits of their labour means their action drops, momentum is lost and this success doesn’t last. This is something that will not happen with the most successful people. Their feeling of accomplishment means that they not only see the positive of the moment but the future prospects of also what may then come from this already positive experience.
This turn in fortune can be seen as a painful experience with most people; this is all down to perspective. An experience like this can alter your life in two ways: You can either focus on the positives and recreate the former success which had been achieved, or the other option is to focus on the downfall, the loss in momentum and the ultimate downfall of the situation.
As we mentioned before, this could be in any aspect of life, with health being one. Whether it may be going to the gym and seeing improvements in your fitness after a regular regime, having a couple of “reward days” off as you have done so well then losing that momentum and losing the gains you previously made. Going to a chiropractor can be similar. You may start off in pain, have a few sessions and notice the symptoms have gone so you miss a couple of appointments or stop care all together and the symptoms return. You may have reduced the symptoms but with that underlying issue still remaining the benefits and success made can be lost.
Everything we do; every choice we make; everything in life we experience is either positive or negative, empowering or discouraging, based on the perspective we create around the experience.
Listen, I know we would all love to permanently be riding the crest of an exhilarating wave, but the reality is that we are going to have times which we are not enjoying the good times and it is the choices we make while riding the wave as well as when we wipe-out from that wave that determines the quality of life we are going to live.
So let’s break this down... we work as hard as we can doing the things we know we need to do to be successful, we then have a choice: 1) we either enjoy that brief time of enjoyment from the success we get and then have to start from scratch and formulate a new plan, or 2) we look at what worked well and find a way to make sure we are continuing that success, accept there will be times where we seem to be on a dip but continue to put in the work. We need to do this consistently, re-evaluating what is and isn’t working to keep us on the crest of the wave which takes us to the ideal life, whatever that may be for you.
What the interesting and exciting part of this process is the ability to find the adventure and fulfilment in the struggle of the dips. Can you continue to resiliently put in work to achieve that successful end? Or is it easier to have momentary success and a lifetime of making new plans to reach that peak? Remember there is no such thing as overnight success, and as the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day...

7 Tips for a Spring Detox

Each year there are two equinoxes. Sunday saw the March equinox. This is a time when the sun shines directly on the equator, meaning the length of day and night is the same. The March equinox is a perfect time for us to detox. Just like how we spring clean our houses, we should also ‘spring clean’ our bodies. Follow these 7 tips to detox your body:

1. Water
Water is needed for every chemical process that happens in our bodies. We all need to aim to drink more. Why not start each day with a glass of water? Or make your water more interesting by adding some fruit and letting it infuse!

2. Sugar free
Sugar has now been found to be as addictive as drugs like cocaine. It is a very hard habit to kick but start to reduce food with high sugars and food with artificial sugars and add in more natural sugars in the form of fruits and vegetables.

3. Breathe deeply
Start the exercise 4-7-8: breathe in for 4 seconds, hold for 7 seconds and breathe out for 8 seconds. Breathe in through the nose and out through the mouth. This is great to do at the end of the day to switch off the mind.

4. Sleep Early
Rest is essential as this is when our bodies repair and recover. Sleep before midnight is very important. Also it is important to avoid blue light, e.g. TVs, mobile phones and iPads, before sleeping.

5. Remove Toxins
Toxins are everywhere, not just in our food like we believe. Some tips include eating organic, switching to natural deodorant and avoiding chemical laden house cleaners (look for brands like Ecover).

6. Create a Spring Detox Timeline
If you have never done a detox start off slow. There is no time limit. Always aim to create a new healthy habit that you can stick to for the rest of your life – this may seem like a big challenge but start off with short term goals. You can do it!

7. Get Aligned
Your skull and spine protects the master controller of your body - your brain and your spinal cord. Re-aligning the spine allows the brain to send the correct information to the rest of the body. This is how chiropractic care can help the body globally, so make sure you are being looked after by a chiropractor.
