Paraclete Announces New Initiatives

News Release - October 21, 2013

To mark its 30th year in book publishing, Paraclete Press of Brewster, Massachusetts is announcing three new initiatives that aim to position itself for a more global reach and impact in the coming decade. Each is an outgrowth of the mission of the Press as an outreach of the Community of Jesus in nearby Orleans, Massachusetts.

First, Paraclete announces the establishment of The Mount Tabor Center for Art and Spirituality in Barga, Italy, owned and operated by the Community of Jesus. This new center, housed in a villa that sleeps twelve and has ample space for lectures, workshops, and exhibits, will expand Paraclete’s ecumenical outreach. The impetus for this venture began in 2011 when the Community of Jesus sponsored a forum on liturgical art and worship in nearby Florence, Italy, and relationships were established that resulted in this exciting new opportunity. Monsignor Timothy Verdon, one of the world’s most respected art historians, and an accomplished author and teacher, has been retained as the Academic Director of the Center.

Second, the Press announces a new imprint under the Paraclete umbrella, “Mount Tabor Books,” which will focus entirely on liturgical worship, art and art history, ecumenism, and the first millennium church. The first “Mount Tabor Books” will be published in late 2014 and will carry the dual geographical notice of Brewster, Massachusetts USA and Barga, Italy, signaling the expansion of Paraclete Press to Europe.

Third, in another example of its commitment to the arts, Paraclete announces the expansion of its poetry line, which has long been among the most respected in religious trade publishing, but now will increase from two books a year to four or five, under the series name, “Paraclete Poetry.”

Finally, Paraclete Press announces the promotion of its Editor-in-Chief, Jon M. Sweeney, to the additional title of Publisher effective September 1, 2013. Jon has been with the Press since October 2004 and this promotion recognizes his contributions to Paraclete’s recent success as well as the importance of his role in its future endeavors.

If you would like to interview Jon M. Sweeney, please feel free to email him directly at jsweeney@paracletepress.com. If you have any questions about Paraclete Press, The Community of Jesus, or any of these initiatives, Carol Showalter would like to hear from you at carols@paracletepress.com.

The Community of Jesus is a monastic-style, Christian community in the Benedictine tradition located on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. Founded nearly fifty years ago, the liturgical life of the 300 resident members, plus many oblates throughout the United States, is centered around chanting the Divine Hours (daily praying of the psalms), and community living. “The Community of Jesus may very well be the first neo-monastic community of the emergence sensibility to be established in this country.”-Phyllis Tickle, author of The Great Emergence

"All of us deserve part of the blame for everything that goes wrong in the family of mankind, and it is our duty to change this and to heal. If we neglect doing this, if we do not take action and carry out the task that we have been given, then we are jointly responsible for the result.”  - Freddy Derwahl, from The Last Monk of Tibhirine
I just finished reading the manuscript copy and what struck me the most was the humble commitment that led these monks to remain in Algeria and simply be present with their neighbors in a time of unchecked violence in their country. Their goal had never been to convert their Muslim neighbors ...

On the birthday of the Church, we offer this prayer for the unity of Christians everywhere, that we may all know the inspiration of the Holy Spirit – the Creator, the Giver of Gifts, the Comforter – and be drawn together by the power of His love. A Blessed Pentecost!

In 1970, near a small fishing village on the shores of Cape Cod Bay, God called the Community of Jesus together—some 25 mostly Protestant Christians, who felt a common sense of vocation to live, pray, and work together. Today the Community of Jesus has grown into a contemporary Benedictine ...

Check out this great guest post from Jack Levison, author of Fresh Air:
On Sunday, we'll wear red to mark the start of the season of Pentecost. Why? To remember tongues as of fire that burned over the heads of Jesus' earliest followers and friends. Many of us, however, will remember with a splash of red what we'll rarely experience: a rushing wind, tongues as of ...

Paraclete Press is a publisher of essential Christian wisdom. It is our mission to publish books, music and videos which remind us, “Never lose hope in the mercy of God.” (The Rule of St. Benedict)
Introduction
Benedictine spirituality is at the heart of all we do, we are an ecumenical publisher and as such we present works that unite us and enrich our understanding as Christians, whether Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox or Evangelical.  Paraclete publishes about 40 books a year and distributes the recordings of Gloriae Dei Cantores and the Monks of Solesmes, France. We also publish sheet music and an award-winning line of educational videos. Our sales department directly serves over 5,000 churches and 5,000 bookstores, and we distribute our books and music through Barnes & Noble, Borders, Amazon.com, and other major retailers.  The same graphic artists who design our book covers are available to design for you, whether it be a new website or traditional print media.  Paraclete Press was incorporated in 1983 and is the publishing house of the Community of Jesus, an ecumenical monastic community rooted in the Benedictine tradition. Located on Cape Cod, Massuchusetts, the Community of Jesus is made up of over 300 members including vowed religious brothers and sisters, families and singles.  Many of the employees of Paraclete Press are members of the Community of Jesus. We work here because we believe that the products we publish can bring people closer to God and that they offer the gift of hope which changes lives.
