Mississippi’s Rebel Rides.
When state Sen. Chris McDaniel filed a lawsuit in 2010 challenging the constitutionality of Obamacare in Mississippi, Phil Bryant, the lieutenant governor at the time, joined it.
When Bryant called for an Arizona-like immigration law to allow police to perform random checks of citizenship, McDaniel took up the cause, drafting the legislation.
As governor, Bryant enthusiastically signed a stack of McDaniel-sponsored bills that gave businesses more input on the regulations that govern them, added terrorism to the list of crimes that could trigger the death penalty and protected students' right to express religious preferences at public ceremonies and sporting events.
And even when McDaniel broke off with 10 of his Republican colleagues in 2013 to form a conservative Senate coalition designed to evaluate the merits of GOP-led legislation, Bryant was publicly supportive, with his spokesman saying the governor was encouraged by the move and looked forward to "working with them as they fight for fiscal responsibility and conservative values."
For years, McDaniel and Bryant enjoyed a mutually beneficial political alliance rooted in conservative political principles in governing one of the reddest states in the country.

Now, they're at loggerheads – bitter foes in a face-off over a U.S. Senate seat suffused in recriminations, revenge and redemption that could ultimately determine the balance of power in the upper chamber this fall.

Everything began to change when McDaniel announced his campaign to challenge Sen. Thad Cochran in 2013, presenting himself as a fresh face of a new generation who would shun statesmanlike dealmaking and press confrontation in defense of core GOP values. At the outset, Bryant didn't take McDaniel's maverick challenge seriously, essentially waving it off, according to a source close to the governor. He supported Cochran and thought McDaniel's bid was a relatively harmless play to raise his name recognition for a future statewide run.
