A MUST read. Although, I guess, people who don't get it (or just too addicted to "Likes", "Faves", "+1's" and "X1's") will find an intellectually proper way to dismiss it...

+Karin Nelson For me, personally, it's not a sad picture at all. On the contrary - I see it as a picture of a triumphant defiance :)

Btw, a visibly drunk person in Tel Aviv is an extremely rare spectacle.

This figure reminded me of a scene from the Russian classic "Taras Bulba", by N.Gogol. I've managed to find the particular passage translated into English. Here it is:

"But the first man they encountered was a Zaporozhetz (Kazzak) who was sleeping in the very middle of the road with legs and arms outstretched.
Taras Bulba could not refrain from halting to admire him. "How splendidly developed he is; phew, what a magnificent figure!" he said, stopping his horse. It was, in fact, a striking picture. This Zaporozhetz had stretched himself out in the road like a lion; his
scalp-lock, thrown proudly behind him, extended over upwards of a foot of ground; his trousers of rich red cloth were spotted with tar, to show his utter disdain for them."

Alex, I love the red and the shallow depth of field in this. In fact there's a few photos in your colour street album where I loved your reds.

Concise. Very well put.

An important thought to consider for all would-be Street Photographers out there, from Nick Turpin:

"Good Street Photographs show you something you still would not have seen had you been there."

Agree completely with the quote, and I'm very happy to have found your work, Alex, as it is very well aligned with the statement. I especially love the humor in many of your photos. Very inspiring as my goals and preferences are very similar.

The Online Photographer - excellent as usual. A wonderful time-killer, that is surprisingly useful (in my opinion) for self-editing. Personally, I do exactly that. When I hit a brick wall, I'll settle for "Fine", otherwise, gotta "Love it".

Sometime when you're bored and have some time to waste, try this. Go to Flickr. Enter a search term that will pull up some of the kinds of pictures you like to look at. "Birds" or "Leica M8" or "Kodac...

Ok... for people with a FB account - wonderful (if sad) photography from Siberia by the 'Unknown Artist'.

Very, very strong stuff.

Not a new picture. But it deserved to be resurrected. I don't know what he meant by these figures he makes with his fingers. He's no longer around, so I can't ask. Perhaps he curses me. Perhaps, he shows the doodley squat to someone up there.

No longer around. Can't ask.

I don't know about the sign, but it's a great and lasting image of someone who has passed on.

As regards mortality... I think it's a huge blessing that the vast majority of us can enjoy life every day even though we know that one day we'll die, just as surely as sunrise follows nighttime. Or should that be "as surely as nighttime follows sunset"? I doubt that this gentleman for example would've cared to know the day of his death. Or do you look back at photos of yourself as a child and fervently think "if only I'd known what was to come?" Maybe; maybe we'd live more fully if we did know exactly what was coming. I doubt it, though.
