Brujeria

Bruno and Main, Chinatown, Los Angeles; June 2014

I tried to channel my inner Stephen Shore on this one. I'm not sure how successful I was.

It took a few tries before I got the train in the right spot.

Heading for Cedars-Sinai

Beverly Boulevard near San Vicente Boulevard, West Hollywood; June 2014

The paramedics happened by as I was walking back to my car after shooting some photos for Dani at her performance art piece at Riot I, the art festival at LA Pride.

A rare technical note, as it seems germane this time: The shutter speed was 1/15 of a second.

Lone Pine, California; May 2014

The people in this little town in the Eastern Sierra are among the friendliest and most helpful I’ve ever met.

We left our flashers on for too long while we stopped to shoot photos and video, killing our battery. We were several miles out of town in what looked like the middle of nowhere, but the first person who drove by went back up the road to get her husband, who gave us a jump.

Dani needed some barbed wire for a film she was shooting, but the quarter-mile rolls at the store were just a bit more than she was looking for. A woman overheard her and offered to give her some barbed wire she no longer needed.

Lone Pine gets a ton of visitors, some of whom I’m sure aren’t exactly on their best behavior. So you couldn’t blame the residents, especially those not in the tourist trade, if they were less than thrilled to see us. But every time we’ve been to Lone Pine, we’ve felt nothing but a warm welcome.

Oh, and Gardner’s is the most amazing store. If they don’t have it, I’m pretty sure it doesn’t exist.

Just visited the Leica Gallery to see Craig Semetko's photos. Semetko was interviewed by +Ibarionex Perello on The Candid Frame podcast recently and mentioned that his show would be there through the 25th. Luckily for me, the gallery is about a five-minute walk from my workplace. It would have been worth a much longer walk. The photos are fantastic — they're beautifully composed, and a lot of them are gently funny. Semetko cited Erwitt and Cartier-Bresson as influences, and it shows. If you're in L.A. and have an interest in street photography (or photography at all, for that matter), you should go.

Suburban landscape

Down the block in #Pasadena, just now.

Sketch was with me when I shot this, sniffing around in the tall grass. Then I spent a half hour picking foxtails and burrs out of his fur. Little guy's made of Velcro.

I shot this while walking back to my car after seeing the fantastic Photo Paris LA last Saturday.

Paris Photo Los Angeles (http://www.parisphoto.com/losangeles) is fantastic for many reasons, and one of them is the setting. The show is at the Paramount Pictures studios, and a couple dozen galleries set up shop in Paramount’s New York backlot. The people watching kinda took my breath away.

If you’re in L.A., you can go see for yourself. It’s open until 6 p.m. today.

Oh, that one guy in the shades? I don’t know whether he’s smiling or grimacing, but he held his expression long enough for me to take three photos of it.
