What's Your Biggest Secret?

My 9 year old daughter and I were talking tonight, and she said something about, "well, what if I told someone your biggest secret? Would you be mad at me then?" And then I saw her eyes twinkle with a new, better thought. "Wait. What's your biggest secret?"

I thought about it for a moment. It's a really tricky question, isn't it? I mean, we all have secrets of some level or another. I probably have more than some folks, but fewer than others. But then, I told her my biggest secret.

"I'm afraid all the time."

She said, "Of what?"

I said, "Oh, everything. I'm afraid all the time. I'm shy when I meet new people. I'm scared that I won't figure things out with work. I'm afraid that I'll do things wrong with raising you. I'm afraid of hurting people's feelings. Yep, I'm afraid pretty much every minute of every day."

She thought about it for a moment. "So, you're a chicken all the time?"

"Oh, no," I replied. "I'm not chicken all the time. I do a lot of things that require that I be brave. But bravery isn't when you're not afraid," I told her. "Bravery is when you're afraid and you find a way to do it anyhow."

She paused.

"I was afraid to jump on the rope swing at camp. I chickened out every time."

"Are you kidding?" I said? "That thing looks like it's a mile over the lake, and you think all kinds of horrible things like, 'what if I'm the one kid who just falls straight down the bank and dies on the shore?' and things like that."

She nodded, knowing exactly what I meant.

I said, "But then, at some point, you'll find some bravery and attack that swing. But that's on YOUR timetable. No one else's. Yucky things happen when other people try to rush our bravery."

And with that, she went to sleep with a drowsy smile.

And that, friends, is my biggest secret.

The brutally honest guide to naming circles on G+ - you know you're all doing it - friends and acquaintances just doesn't quite classify right :)

Any you care to add?

Since I have transcriptionists working for me, I rarely transcribe anymore, but when I do, I'm thankful for my Dragon VR software. It's amazing! :-)

Yeah, I don't think most people realize just how accurate their VR software is. It saves me a lot of time!
