The last paragraph is relevant to article on the automation of design jobs.
I also heard on program Day Six that there is a Predictalator that examines creates 50,000 permutations of college football games to provide the probability of each specific match-up. This raw computing power processing big data is the 'threat' to design based jobs. 50,000 design permutations will be crunched and they will each be measured against the probability that the criteria are appropriately met. The designer will simply input the criteria and curate the output.
Went for a run. My reflections yielded this:
Is it not a pressing paradox that a start-up requires broad and deep generalists but a mature company thrives on specialists at the floor level? How to transition? How to transcend?
How can the corporation harness the talents of specialists without 'human middleware' managers?
has me believing that the mature corporation can be shaped by roles defined by broad evolutionary rules – specifically relationship rules between roles – and an operational goal that through definition of goals specific to the role, role mutation, measuring and managing the result of the mutation, and iteration the organization can evolve. Perhaps even behave like a start-up.
The key is in the definition of the proxies for progress and the rules for roles.
We are designing systems by providing input conditions into known solutions. Soon we will design systems by providing output goals, the design process will create many solutions that will be tested for rigour, through natural selection the designer will be presented a solution optimized to the requested goals.
