This is my boy at the 400 year old oven of Forno Antica in Altamura, Puglia. It is one of the oldest bakeries producing the famous Altamura Bread. This bread will last for weeks and has an hearty crust and rich flavor. The Owner Vito Marcello invited us for a "tasting" which turned out to be one of the best meals we had in all of our three weeks in Italy last October.

I am on a quest to find a recipe for Altamura bread that I can make at home (I'm a great pizza maker and fairly good bread baker). Anyone got one?

I have tried to explain to my friends who tell me not to eat bread how wonderful and different the bread is in Italy, hopefully they will get to try it soon.

La Famiglia, Vino e Grotte
The Family, Wine and Caves is the name of our family travel blog about our experiences during a three week voyage to Italy. My wife Lisa, our 11 year old son Lucas and I traveled to Tuscany (San Gimignano, Pienza, Monteriggione, Pisa, Florence, Fiesole, Vinci, Lucca), the Amalfi Coast, Basilicata (Pietrapertosa, Castelmezzano, Matera), Puglia, Bari, Molfetta, Locorotondo, Altamura, Alberobello) and Rome. Enjoy the photos and stories on our website... there is a bit of romance, family, humor, critiques, discoveries and more. Learn from our mistakes, laugh with us and enjoy the beauty of Italy, an amazingly beautiful but complex country.
