I realise I haven't been using this space to show works-in-progress, as I had originally intended. So here's a step back in that direction: a photo of wooden panels, covered in linen and size, being prepared for gessoing in a few days time. Hopefully I'll have some new sketches to show you soon!

First test print of mezzotint practice plate.
Some places still need to be lightened and defined more. Since it was just for practice, the plate was grounded with a roulette, and not properly rocked with a mezzotint rocker. Using the roulette has given it a sort of blurry look and the shadows are not a very rich black.
Well, it's a start.. but maybe a sort of creepy-looking one.

A tonal study for a practice mezzotint. Drawn in the Burrell Collection during a hailstorm (unfinished because I ran out of time before the museum closed). The model was a small, medieval, wooden statue possibly from Belgium. While I was drawing some priests walked by and commented on how at the time this was made it was common to find depictions of Saint Anne with a book, teaching Mary to read.
