Tuesday evening, June 27, 2017, the team at Berkeley Dental Care was re-certified in the American Heart Association CPR Basic Life Support (BLS) Instructor-led course for healthcare providers. The course included lecture, video, live demonstrations, practice, a written examination and a practical test. The course was focused on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

Dr. Omar Ghoneim is pictured here engaged in 2-man CPR for an infant under the watchful guidance of the American Heart Association Instructors.

Many thanks to members of the Berkeley Fire Department who provided the excellent instruction and training.

Do you wake up with a sore jaw or are you grinding your teeth? A night guard may be the answer!

What is a night guard?
It is a removable appliance (prosthesis) that you wear during the night to prevent you from grinding your teeth together (bruxism) and over stressing your facial muscles. The mouth piece snaps snugly over your teeth. The guard is typically worn at night while you are sleeping.

What are indications for a night guard?
Here are some symptoms or indications for a night guard.
Signs of wear on the teeth (attrition).
Signs of wear on restorations.
Short teeth.
Cracked or chipped teeth.
Bone loss.
Patient complains of waking up with a sore jaw or facial muscles.
Patient complaining of clenching his/her jaw.

Dr. Omar Ghoneim, Berkeley dentist, will examine your teeth and the supporting tissues for your teeth. The night guard is fabricated in the dental office or dental lab for a superior fit.

If you are looking for relief from restless sleep, sore jaw or teeth grinding, call Berkeley Dental Care for your appointment. Berkeley Dental Care offers night guards.

What can cause a tooth to break?
Well, there are several reasons a tooth will fracture. When a tooth factures, it generally means that to save the tooth, Dr Ghoneim will have to place a crown to keep the tooth from breaking further. Sometimes the tooth needs a tooth build-up, root canal and in other circumstances, the tooth cannot be saved.

If the tooth has a vertical fracture or if the tooth fractures at or below the gum line, the tooth may have to be extracted. The tooth could be replaced with a dental bridge or implant.

4 Reasons a tooth will fracture
1. Silver fillings. Silver fillings or amalgam, have are metal and they expand as they age. Silver fillings also expand when you eat hot foods or drink hot liquids and contract when you eat or drink cold foods and liquids. So, your filling may pull away from the tooth or expand within your tooth causing pressure.

2. Bruxism. Another common factor causing a tooth fracture is bruxism (grinding or clenching the teeth). Bruxing causes wear and excessive forces to the teeth eroding away enamel. Wearing a night guard is a simple way to prevent tooth fracture due to grinding or clenching your teeth.

3. Delayed Treatment. If Dr Ghoneim has informed you that you need dental treatment because you have a cavity, schedule an appointment! Scheduling that dental treatment promptly will help prevent the cavity from spreading causing a larger, deeper cavity that can undermine more of the tooth leading to a fracture.

4. Dental Trauma. An impact due to a fall or sports injury can cause the tooth to chip or fracture. Wearing a custom made mouth guard while participating in any sporting event will protect your teeth from trauma.

Don't wait until your tooth fractures! Call us at (708) 449-8683 to schedule your dental appointment to help decrease your need for dental treatment due to tooth fractures.

FUN FACT: The history of toothpaste dates back to the late 1800's. The first tube of toothpaste was invented by Dr. Lucius Sheffield. He introduced his Crème Dentifrice toothpaste in a tube back in 1886. Dr. Sheffield sold his toothpaste for just 25¢ a tube. You could purchase a trial size tube for just 4¢ for travel use. Check out that key on the bottom of the tube! They started squeezing every bit of precious toothpaste out efficiently back then too.

Prior to 1886, toothpaste was distributed in jars, according to Colgate. Colgate started mass producing their toothpaste in jars in 1873.
