It's been a while since we got a movie related MoS song. (Not since The Crush.) Cool to hear Gav do his take on Howard Shore.

Ah. I am corrected. Nutcrackers are on Encore, not Bravo.

The subject of this week's Vlog is D&D Next. Quick summary: I'm hoping to play an awful lot of it when it comes out.

I've been doing a video blog about games. Check out my Youtube channel. For April Fools Day I make a long overdue admission to friends and family.

This week I decided I'd like to win some games at FNM rather than just playing a fun deck. Finding it surprisingly hard to build a deck that has a chance of beating the midrange metagame at my LGS but which I still want to play. Maybe I should just accept that for me winning is not necessarily fun.

You can have fun, or you can win.  In MTG, there is, unfortunately, no real compromise.  I have seen some sparks of promise lately (home brew versions of midrange stuff that I hadn't quite seen) that I didn't mind having my face beaten wide open with, but unfortunately that just seems to be how it is as of late.

So much so that I sold off the majority of my standard staples (From my binders, I kept decks - well, except for my EDH, which I took out the expensive stuff and sold) this past weekend at the Modern PTQ I was playing at.  I may have technically only gone 2-2/drop, but man did it feel nice to walk out of a PTQ up over a grand.  If that's not #winning , I don't know what is.

Voting done!  Hardly had any wait in line either (maybe ten minutes.)  I was all set to spend the whole morning playing Pokemon in line.  Pleased that the line was moving so fast - it wasn't getting any shorter either - just about as many people waiting when we left as when we arrived.

Yeah, I walked in and there was a line out the door.  A polite policeman asked which precinct, and when I said precinct two he said 'oh, okay, walk right up to the precinct two sign', I got confused.  Then, I stepped through the line and saw it was blocking the sign for precinct two, which had no line whatsoever. One person ahead of me  Fascinating.

Also, I wrote in Batman for President.  Everything else, I took seriously though.

(also, I am kidding about Batman for President).

Played "Commander" at FNM for the first time last night.  My first game involved me getting completely locked out of the game as my opponent played a card that countered the first spell I cast on every turn and then another that prevented me from casting more than one spell per turn.  Awesome combo!  (I scooped and went to game two - only on the way home did it occur to me that if I had held in there there was a very small chance that i would get out my Cavern of Souls, which would have let me at least play some creatures from my hand - but probably wouldn't have been enough to save my ass.)

It was pretty ridiculous, I'm still somewhat in shock.  While the deck tries to do it at some point as a way of winning, I've never been able to do it, and I NEVER envisioned being able to do it turn four.

It involved the following.
Turn three, Cast Zur the Enchanter.
Turn four, had the following cards in hand: Gold Myr (I think), Mox Opal, Ponder... I had something like 5-6 mana on the deck due to artifacts (but I remembered needing the Myr to make Opal work due to its metalcraft requirement)... top decked Erayo, Soratami Ascendant.  Proceeded to Gold Myr, Mox Opal, Eryao and then Ponder as fourth spell of the turn, which flipped Erayo to the legendary enchantment Erayo's Essence.  Then I went to attack with Zur, and searched my deck for Arcane Laboratory using Zur's 'on attack' ability.

The one thing I will say is that Cavern of Souls could have worked if you had it out, but it was only a matter of a turn or two before I'd start drawing obscene cards via Necropotence, and making Zur unblockable via Steel of the Godhead and tossing Empyrial Armor on him.
