When I think of organization, I have to admit: custom binders do not leap to the top of my list. I'm much more likely to search for an app for organizing notes, recordings, or whatever I need on my smartphone than I am to pick up a binder. But recently, in the most unlikeliest of places,  I was reminded that some people are more tactile.
I was watching Brooklyn Nine Nine, and the character of Amy Santiago was enjoying a new binder.

Simple Pleasures of Custom Binders

For those who don't watch the show, Amy is a somewhat Type-A detective with a penchant for organization and procedure. She's tidy, polite, and loves her binders.  Amy and her binders are something of a running gag, but there's something to the simple pleasure she receives.
In the hyper world of the TV cop show, it's understandable how something so seemingly simple can be soothing and bring calmness.  It's a small piece of sanity, a corner of control. When everything else is volatile and subject to the whims of coworkers and criminals, Amy's custom binders are 100% in her control.

Why Bind It When You Can Scan It?

The ability to pick up and page through a binder is soothing. Users can see everything at once with just a few flips instead of searching through a smartphone. It's a conventional organization system; easy to pick up and intuit, versus someone's private devices. I know that my method of filing (or lack thereof...I prefer to tag things, then just enter a search query when I want it) isn't the same as others. Using a standard system within a binder makes it easier for the entire office to find common resources quickly and efficiently.
Scanning/taking pictures of documents on the go is handy, but when it comes to document sharing (especially in a not-so-technology-literate organization), it can get tricky. Especially when no one wants to admit that they don't fully understand how to access something. Take the guesswork out by storing communal resources in custom binders.

Options for Custom Binders

Here at Sunrise Packaging (Minnesota), we've been experimenting with some great new, more durable options for custom binders. New techniques include creating covers from a single piece of chipboard, increasing their ability to withstand pressure and the effects of time. Euro-scoring, or rounded corners, help people grasp binders more easily. It's a great option for larger documentation sets or files. Not to mention that pockets or adhesive trays can be added as well to hold discs, notepads, or anything else that could be useful. Contact us today to talk about your needs, discuss cover printing options, and more. Amy would be proud!

http://www.sunpack.com/custom-cigar-boxes/
Finding a box that’s truly versatile is a harder task that it sounds. We love custom cigar boxes because, simply put, they’re classic. It’s a style of box associated with cigars, naturally, but there’s something both Old World and modern about it. Depending on the design, a single box style can take on multiple personalities. While the classic cigar-style box presents convenience and ease of opening, it also naturally heightens the luxury and elegance factor. It’s clear to see why this is one of our most popular styles, isn’t it?
Features of Custom Cigar Boxes

Classic style

From a new baby to weddings, cigars (and cigar boxes) are synonymous with celebrating and good feelings. The style lends itself to presentation, begging to be opened to whomever the custom box is presented.

Large variety of finishing options

Inlaid foil for your logo? Check. Colored chipboard to match branding guidelines? Check. Nearly anything you can think of, Sunrise Packaging can figure it out. Okay maybe not everything but we can try.

Interior organization

It doesn’t matter what’s going inside the box. What matter is that, when the customer opens it, everything is in its place. Select an option that fits your budget and keeps your product safe.

High quality materials = instant keepsake

One of my favorite things growing up was a literal cigar box from my grandfather. While Sunrise doesn’t deal in the wood and metal locking devices (my favorite features of my cigar box), we can utilize high quality materials. It’ll help ensure that your custom cigar boxes are valued by customers for days to come.

Ability to recreate this iconic scene from Pretty Woman

It probably won’t involve early 90’s Richard Gere, but we can’t all be that lucky.

Custom cigar boxes are our go-to suggestion when it comes to a box style that conveys instant luxury and nostalgia. Everyone has a memory involving a cigar-style box. It’s our job to make it’s a positive one. Contact a representative today to learn more about finishing options and putting your own spin on this classic style.

http://www.sunpack.com/luxury-packaging-market/

It's a good time to be in the luxury packaging business.
According to a report from Market Intel Reports (read more at Whatech), the luxury packaging market is set to increase by 5% in the next five years. That means by 2021, the market should reach a value of over $20 billion. Large as the number is, this isn't a total surprise. Sunrise Packaging has had a front-row seat in watching these trends grow over recent years. The demand for great packaging has never been higher, and if this report is correct, it's only going to increase in the coming years.
The full report includes information on opportunities and restraints on the market, but here are our main takeaways.

Luxury Packaging Trends

So what's driving the increase in demand? There are three main factors--

personalized packaging
increasing awareness to sustainability issues
demographic and economic drivers

--combined with the need for premium brands to find more ways to differentiate themselves. The rapidly-changing marketplace means that brands can't coast on their name anymore. Consumers have access to literal world of products available via the Internet, and if a brand isn't holding up, consumers aren't shy about broadcasting their displeasure.
The report includes more information on the state of every continent in terms of the luxury packaging market. The United States is the largest luxury market ( 21.5% revenue share). China holds the distinction of taking second in two categories: consumer of luxury goods and luxury packaging manufacturer. However, with a 36% consumption share of the world’s luxury good market (in terms of revenues), Europe leads the way. It helps that the majority of luxury brand houses call the continent home. Take a second and write down the top five luxury brands that come into your head. What's on the list? Gucci? Chanel? Rolex? Mercedes Benz?  Italian, French, Swiss, German.  From that list, you can also get a sense for the products that tend to drive the market.
It used to be that these products were hard to get. They were limited to those who either lived in areas affluent enough to shop the storefront, or those able to order via catalogs or other methods. E-commerce has leveled the access level (not to mention discount sites and others). Luxury packaging helps to set products apart in the egalitarian marketplace. Packaging has an important role in maintaining a brand's image. This is even more important in the age of social media, as brands are finding opportunities to tie custom packaging to marketing strategy.

Custom Boxes & Luxury Packaging

Luxury packaging is about a few factors: design, materials, and experience. Does the package design reflect your product and your consumers expectations? Did you use materials and finishing options that look and feel a little indulgent for the consumer? And consider how both of those designs contribute to the experience of opening the package. Custom options make the difference between luxury and mundane. Contact Sunrise Packaging today to help create your luxury packaging.

The 2016 baseball World Series will see one team put an end to a longstanding drought. As the Cleveland Indians face the Chicago Cubs, their histories are almost overshadowing the series itself.  It’s been over 50 years since the Indians won the World Series, and over 100 years since the Cubs won (yup, the World Series has been a thing for a while). There are a lot of elements that need to come together for a baseball team to make it to the top of the pile. But it all starts with fundamentals. A good pitching staff, a solid batting lineup that delivers, minimal fielding errors, all things that are possible at any level of the game. That’s what makes them fundamentals. The same principles apply to putting together sales kits.
Sales kits, as Bark Creative puts it, are the “pinch hitter” for marketing any business. They should be malleable to be used by sales teams in different settings and environments, appropriate and attractive for consumers. When you need to get the attention of a potential customer, call in the sales kit. Here’s what you need to have.
Key Elements of Winning Sales Kits

Letter of Recognition

Just like you would write a cover letter to go with your resume, include a customized letter in your sales kit for the recipient. Let them know how/where you met, any relevant details, but most importantly, how you can help them.
Case Studies

It’s surprising how many businesses tend to spend time and money crafting copy, but don’t utilize one of the most powerful marketing tools: case studies. Basically, review your portfolio of customers and select a few that exemplify your business model. Chronicle your work with them, and turn it into a narrative that exemplifies your work style, mission, values, and most importantly, how you build relationships with clients and customers.
Products & Services

Now that you’ve shown them what you do, tell them what you told them. Redundant? Not to retain information.  Include a list of services or products in your sales kits so it’s clear to your prospective customers what’s offered.
Ending Call To Action

This is how to ensure that your pinch hitter (AKA sales kit) hits a home run.  Lay out the next steps for the recipient. Is it a phone call, an email, a form completion? Don’t make it hard for your customers to give you money.

And how do you tie all these elements together? Presentation packaging.
Presentation packaging is the key to making your sales kit memorable. Think of the purpose of uniforms for baseball teams. They tie the players to each other, but are still personalized with numbers and names. Uniforms are branded proudly, and designed to be functional and resilient. Most importantly? They sell the team as a whole. Presentation packaging should do the same for your sales kits.

http://www.sunpack.com/healthcare-packaging-2026/
The healthcare packaging market outlook through 2026 was released earlier today (October 20, 2016). This research, conducted and produced by Commodity Inside, attempts to predict the future of the market. It helps producers and manufacturers alike know what to expect in terms of medical packaging trends and requirements. The report also provides a commentary on both existing and emerging markets, particularly where organizations may want to focus attention going forward.
Elements Affecting Healthcare Packaging
On average, countries spend 10% of the world’s Gross Domestic Product (or GDP) in the health sector every year. Populations are growing in nearly every corner of the globe. This leads to increased urbanization, increased aging population, and an overall increase in healthcare spending from consumers as well. The increase in demand is expected to continue to rise into the future.
Asia is driving much of the growth in healthcare packaging. Globally, the demand grew in 2015 by 5.6%. This equates to $65.8 billion worldwide. It’s a sizeable market, to say the least, and one still expected to grow by at least that amount in the next decade (another source predicts hitting $82 billion by 2021).  The 2026 outlook includes chapters focusing specifically on:

Asia (China and Japan, specifically)
Europe (France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain, the United Kingdom)
North America (Canada and USA)
Latin America (Brazil)
Australia
Middle East/Africa (Egypt and South Africa)

Each section includes a market review and a market outlook.  An appendix provides further macroeconomic information.
Medical developments are driving the demand as well. As devices become more lightweight and efficient, packaging needs to reflect those updates. Additionally, medical device packaging needs to meet the needs of consumers. That might mean using magnetic closures on boxes to aid in opening. It might mean integrating carrying components, like handles built into containers, so devices are more mobile. And, like phones and laptops, healthcare developers are always looking to make devices lighter. This means that packages need to take on more protective roles. Look for more rigid setup boxes, thermoformed protective cavities and other custom features.
About Commodity Inside
In addition to healthcare packaging, Commodity Inside also produces reports on corrugated packaging, flexible paper packaging, folding cartons, and more.

http://www.sunpack.com/vinyl-packaging-revamped-for-2016/

While my parents don't admit to being hippies, their record collection tells another story.  My youth is peppered with memories set to music, not unlike an episode of "The Wonder Years." I remember running my fingers over vinyl packaging, picking out albums with intriguing album art (The Who's "Tommy" stands out in my mind) or Cream's "Wheel of Fire." I loved the velvet tones of vinyl, and the way the sound seems to fill a space. At some point, the needle on the turntable broke and didn't get replaced. We got a CD player, the records were boxed up and piled in a closet, and the beat went on.
Since then, music has changed form a few more times. First from CDs to MP3 players like the iPod, and then to streaming with early adopters on Pandora, but now we've entered into an interesting era. In 2016, every sales channel music is slumping except for two: streaming (up 50%) and vinyl (up 11%). I don't think this is a coincidence. There's no ownership associated with streaming. Listeners can quickly sample songs and artists--literally millions of both--for either no fee or a nominal one. When listeners connect with an artist deeply, they want to invest in an experience. That's where vinyl trumps CDs, iTunes, any other form of listening experience.
Naturally, I know I might be a little biased given my childhood love for vinyl. But there's a tangible experience that comes with holding vinyl packaging and dropping that needle, and I think there's a kind of craving for that kind of close-up sentimentality. Of course, there's more to it than that, and TuneCore has a few more ideas as to why vinyl and vinyl packaging is making a resurgence.

Vinyl Packaging as a Form of Art

Whether your shelve it or frame it, album art has the potential to be iconic. Just look at The Beatles' "Sergeant Pepper" album cover. And in 2016, it's risen beyond just the album cover to origami and custom box level.

Vinyl is Tangible

I love Spotify, but here's the thing: you can't leave MP3s or Spotify playlists to your kids, or frame your favorites to put on the wall. You can't have your favorite artists sign the album like vinyl packaging. Digital has a lot of positives, but also a lot of tradeoffs.

Vinyl Goes Mobile

The majority of records purchased today also include a download code so users not only have their gorgeous album, but can also download the tunes to their mobile devices or computers for listening. Amazon is an early pioneer in providing the MP3s along with vinyl purchases.

Vinyl Sounds Off

Vinyl packaging is superior, there's no loss in mobility, so how can it get better for vinyl fans? It usually comes down to the strongest argument...sound quality:
Sound is a range of frequencies. When there is a complete presentation of frequencies that diminishes as the frequency increases, the sound seems to be more complete. Vinyl tends to present the widest range of frequencies due to its analog-to-analog production process. Digital music, because of its compression to keep file sizes manageable, doesn’t present as much of a continual range

When people make this argument, it's a passionate, emotional one.  And it's one echoed by an entire community of people who keep vinyl alive through patronizing smaller shops and hunting through garage sales as well as shopping online. Don McLean may have thought the music died, but it's alive and well decades later.

http://www.sunpack.com/premium-packaging-drives-demand/
The importance of packaging has always resided in its connotations. A plain brown paper wrapping might appear innocuous. But in previous decades, it might have hid a salacious purchase (at least, that’s what David Hyde Pierce’s ‘Down With Love‘ character has led me to believe).  In 2016, people might be a little less inhibited, but packaging is still just as important. Especially premium packaging. In this era of internet shopping, subscription boxes, and a rapidly-growing marketplace, retailers need to find ways to hook customers and, ideally, turn them into repeat shoppers. Products need to find ways to stand out. According to a recent survey, investing in premium packaging is a one of the best ways for companies to do this.

Premium Packaging as a Hook
Dotcom Distribution recently released a survey on driving customer loyalty.  They surveyed nearly 600 shoppers to find out what makes them tick. Or more accurately, what makes them return to certain retailers, and what makes them take their business elsewhere. One of the top ways in which retailers can retain customer is by investing in premium packaging, or custom retail boxes.
Tips to Retain Customers
According to Dotcom Distribution, consumers look for and reward:

Same day shipping options–in fact, fast shipping was even more important than product quality.
Premium packaging. Boxes that make products feel like opening a present, or turn a mundane process into an event (check out Sunrise’s custom box section for ideas).
Error-free and transparent fulfillment process. Understandably, customers want to receive the correct order, and like to know when something is processing, then shipping, and when it’s going to arrive.

However, customer loyalty can be fickle. Forty-seven percent of those surveyed chose not to return to a business with whom they felt the shipping and fulfillment process wasn’t clear enough. However, that negative experience might be redeemed with premium packaging. If a company offers premium packaging, 40% of respondents would give the organization a second chance, and 50% would be more likely to refer them as well.
The key takeaways are two investments. The first lies in designing a process that keeps the customer in the loop.  Automation through a CRM can handle this. The second investment should be in product packaging. Specialized packaging demands specialized solutions, which is what Minnesota-based Sunrise Packaging does best. Bring elements of innovation to both your fulfillment and your packaging, and it’s all but certain that you’ll grow a repeat customer base. At least, that’s what Dotcom Distribution has found to be true!

http://www.sunpack.com/cue-magnetic-closure/
The best products are the ones that solve problems. Innovation can come in any size or material, and we love learning about new products and figuring out how we can help build a brand.  We can design a package  or companion piece that is evocative of the product it’s designed to compliment.Whether it’s magnetic closure, a colorful insert, or a special treatment for edges, Sunrise Packaging can help bring out the best in your product.
Magnetic Closure & CueMate
This recent creation for CueMate gave us the chance to create a custom sample kit for a product launch. CueMate is a mobile cue holder; instead of placing a pool cue in a rack or a stationary holder, this allows players to set their cue down and move it with them. Quality cues need to be stored upright. Even leaning them momentarily against a table or a wall can result in gradual warping and damage to the cue.
This is where CueMate comes in.  It’s a product devoted to maintaining an investment. Consumers can buy cue holders that match their flooring, pool table or decor. They’re made to fit into the lives of the people they serve.
So how do we convey this in a sample kit?

We pride ourselves on creating the perfect companion piece to any product. For something like CueMate, where the focus is on a well-designed solution to a problem, we want to imitate that. For their sample kit, we incorporated a clean design that includes all the elements necessary to draw someone in. The brown shading on the pad references the various wood options without being overt, and the faded words add a subtle design without being distracting.
Flipping open the pad takes a little more effort that it appears at first. The unexpected weight of the magnet closure adds luxury as well as added security (these samples won’t fall out accidentally). Aiding that is the die-cut insert, precision-designed to ensure a place for every sample and a sample for every place. The folder design gives CueMate space to elaborate on their product while still giving the majority of focus to the samples.  Magnetic closure is a great way to secure products while adding a touch of class to any product. We’ve said it before, but it’s still true: magnets make everything better.
Custom pads aren’t the only thing we enjoy designing at Sunrise.  Every project is unique and as such, demands our personalized attention. Whether you’re planning a Kickstarter for your product or a rebranding, contact us today to create something that makes your product even better.

http://www.sunpack.com/designing-custom-game-box/
Playing games is something that goes back to the beginning of sentient beings. Ok, I don’t know that, but we can assume that once beings started being able to think complex thoughts, they were able to become bored. And out of boredom comes attempts at relief, right? That sentiment has endured for centuries. There’s evidence that ancient Romans played tic-tac-toe; Anne Boleyn was quite adept at chess; and in modern times, a simple word game on cards can take the world by storm. It’s no wonder that board games and card games are among some of the most funded Kickstarters.  A custom game box is a great way to draw attention to your Kickstarter as well as spread the word about your product.
Ad Magic CEO Shari Spiro (recently profiled in Bloomberg) knows a thing or two about designing a custom game box. Her company has created packaging for the understated Cards Against Humanity and the more crass Poop: The Game, to name a few. Here are a few considerations for those getting ready to design a custom box for a Kickstarter board game or card game.
Considerations For Your Custom Game Box Design

Have a plan

Don’t pull a number out of thin air when it comes to packaging costs.  The goal is to make money, obviously, so think critically about what you want to sell for, and we here at Sunrise can help provide options from there.
A little whimsy is doable

Crazy custom game packaging abounds on Kickstarter, and not all packaging companies can handle the most extreme. Remember, while outlandish ideas are great to grab attention, they’re not always sustainable. Keep the whimsy to the design, the content, and the game itself.
Leverage your network

Spiro has her favorite vendors and producers to accomplish the challenges that customers place in front of her. Game makers can also reach out to the other people they know who are working to create games, or Kickstarter campaigns, and capitalize on their lessons learned.

Board games and card games are among the most ambitious projects on Kickstarter. They require a varied skillset: creative, logical, ambitious, not to mention entrepreneurial. Crowdfunding is still something of an emerging model, with clear successes and failures as far as projects go. Do your due diligence when it comes to packaging your product. It can help attract funders in the early stages, and it’ll garner new customers as your product launches.

http://www.sunpack.com/flashpad-wallet-versatile-solution/

Happy first day of September, packaging world, and that means a new special is on the table. The FlashPad Wallet is one of our favorite products, and it's one of our client's favorite packages, too.  Here are some of the ways in which we've optimized this multum in parvo product (that's "much in little" if you need to brush up on your Latin)!

FlashPad Wallet in Higher Ed

Engaging students is the number one job of any higher education institution. No matter the department--academics, student life, the library, and so on--they want to make sure that every student has information they need to be successful. The University of Nebraska used a FlashPad Wallet to engage incoming freshman on several levels. The custom design is eye-catching and clearly branded; the recipient is affiliated with the college.

The space on the outside contains targeted messaging as well as social channels for the user to check out. Open it up, and there's more information as well as a key. Not just any key, but a USB key. And, not to drive the metaphor into the ground, but it's a key to knowledge, a new life on campus, and to the next phase of their lives.

Mortgage Lenders & the FlashPad Wallet

FlashPad Wallets are ideal for replacing stacks paper marketing materials or other types of information. As a thank you, a mortgage lender might provide a new homeowner with maps of the area, coupons, home maintenance services, and more. By condensing all that information onto a flashdrive, they've cut down on paper as well as managed to keep their brand at the forefront with full color printing that's vibrant and inviting. Using a flashdrive also makes it easier for them to keep the information current by using hyperlinks instead of printed material.

FlashPad Wallet = Versatility

These examples come from several organizations, but the versatility and level of customization is the same across the board. The FlashPad Wallet die-cut cavity can be customized to hold anything you need--the above examples both hold flashdrives, but also gift cards, commemorative coins or tokens, beer bottle openers, the list goes on. The only criteria? It has to fit the dimensions. The design be a bifold or trifold, depending on the amount of content that should accompany the item.

The FlashPad Wallet can change they way customers perceive your business, and Sunrise Packaging is currently the only producer of these items. And, for this month only, there is no artwork fee. Contact Sunrise today!
