Kevin’s thoughts: In spite of the nationally divided chaos we find ourselves in… …politics, press and personal positions all pail in the glow of basic Biblical principles – these principles don’t change with eroding times and compromised values:

-God will be glorified (by all).
-Life (even new life) is still to be cherished.
-Liars and thieves will be found out.
-Marriage (between a man and a woman) is still sacred.
-Work and service are illustrations of God’s influence over mankind.

Hold fast to Biblical principles, everything else will fade.

“Though much is taken, much abides; and though we are not now that strength which in old days moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are, one equal temper of heroic hearts made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.”
~Tennyson

Kevin’s thoughts: I can think of a dozen (or more) childhood messages/lessons I heard and learned from my parents and we’ve subsequently shared with our kids over the years – messages and lessons that work well on playgrounds, sporting events and any circumstance where cooperation, compromise and consideration of others was paramount – these lessons are easily digested and exercised by most toddlers and elementary school kids…

…however, our elected (over paid, self absorbed, under-productive) leaders in Congress (on both sides) can’t seem to consider even the most basic application of these kid-level human interaction skills – so tragic in so many ways, on so many levels.

We should expect/insist our elected officials to perform (at a minimum) at the same level we expect our kids to perform - ‘We the People’ put them in those roles/positions…

…‘We the People’ should take them out – I’m jus’ sayin’!

Kevin's thoughts - WOW - love me some NCAA Football this week- love the way regular season play flushes out (yes, like a toilet) over rated (candy land conference) teams – now the BCS super-statistician-geeks are in a mess without a play off (again).

Love to see USC (even though they’re a ‘worst coast’ team) knock off (undefeated) Notre Dame next week (sorry Rick and Laura Beth), then we’ll have 12(+) teams with national level best records (one loss teams) piled up demanding a shot at a national championship game – love the chaotic train wreck the BCS finds themselves in without a playoff – minus Rutgers (of course) cause… well, you know… …they’re a ‘Jersey, Big East team with a loss to a MAC team and they will loss to inner-conference Louisville next week (write that down).

FOOTBALL!!!! LOVE IT!!

Okay, so I’m waiting for some HR folks to call me back so I can get my day underway (barn building at Alan Kirks) - am I hungry? No, I’m board (very dangerous)…

…so my boredom stimulates me to create, cook and eat my new “Love of Four” recipe:

4 - ounces melted butter
4 - Ball Park Franks (sliced)
4 – large fresh eggs (whipped)
4 – thick slices of Velveeta cheese (room temperature)
4 – ounces French’s Yellow Mustard

Melt butter on high heat – toss in sliced franks - sauté franks until charred – stir in pre-whipped fresh eggs – stir until eggs are scrambled and butter browned – lay cheese over eggs/franks allow to melt - serve HOT with mustard on top – cause I’m the boss!

Kevin’s thoughts: I’m not sure how I feel about our Founding (Presidential) Fathers being reduced to a punch line or hash-tag for mattress, car or furniture sales (Presidents Day Sales) – their commercials are embarrassing and perhaps even insulting to the nation (worst ads ever) – I am a fan of a sale (I’m not crazy) , but do we have to have a sale by belittling historical presidential figures (how many stovepipe hats does it take to sell a mattress) – what does that say about us?

These concerns feed a greater concern I’ve been chewing on for a while (hold on tight)… …our modern day national figures (presidential, congressional, public office, etc), let’s say over the past 50 yrs have had their share of publicly embarrassing/compromised/unpopular incidents (to put it mildly) - but remember, they are people just like us – they (and we) do things others don’t always agree with – they (and we) have opinions and positions that differ from others - they (and we) do dumb things all the time - however, somewhere-somehow we’ve let our differences evolve into (shameless) public personal attacks on the people in these national level positions (I’m guilty) - I can’t say I agree with a single position of President Obama (not one), but I do want us to respect the ‘office’ of the President of the United States (and other national offices) – no one will disagree Congress is nothing short of (freakishly) dysfunctional, but that won’t change as long as we all remain deadlocked in name calling and mudslinging.

We teach our kids that personal attacks never end well but we (me included) can sling muck with the best of them – I’m just wondering (here’s the point) if we’ve lowered our expectations of ‘respect’ so much that we’ve indirectly eroded our own ability to nurture and perpetuate national pride – our expectations may drive more than we think – should we expect more from ourselves before we expect more from our elected officials?

We can disagree with (what we believe is) bad policy – after all, we (the people) voted them in, so we (the people) can vote them out… …but we don’t have to add to the mounting chaos slung out by the press, lobbyist, pundnits, and other talking heads that divide, erode and compromise our national pride and unity – we (the people) have a tough road ahead of us, personal attacks will not make it any easier – I’m jus’ sayin’.

Kevin's thoughts: I'm not always a fan of Stephen A. Smith (one of the talking heads for ESPN), but I do agree with his assessment that it might be time to 'blow up' and rebuild the Cowboys - the decade of (soft-sided) bleeding must stop.

Football is not an illustration of how we want 'life' to play out where 'nice' things happen to 'nice' guys... ...nice guys (Romo, Garrett - names now forbidden to be spoken aloud) will never win or loose big/key games because they're 'nice' - big/key 'football' games are won (or lost) with (or without, to make my point) consistent gritty gutsy composed leadership regardless of conditions or challenges - the ideal effort to win should look like (or have the flavor of) brutal, in-your-face, teeth clenched, never-say-die screaming resolution to only accept a win at cost (that are not even available to you), but you use those cost (anyway) because you 'took' them (solely) so you could achieve the desired win - much like James T. Kirk (yes, he's real - don't hate) changing the conditions of the 'Kobayashi Maru' (leadership development test of character) for no other reason except to 'win' - (in football) the limits or challenges are only what you allow (or tolerate) them be - own your environment, instead of conforming to it.

Remember football is not an illustration of 'life' nor should it be tethered akin to life situations - football exist for no other reason except for one team to beat another - if a team it looks like or has the flavor of anything 'touchy/feely', finger pointing, excuse making, head hangin' or resembles any characteristic similar to an inner Justin Bieber, Clay Akin or Little Bunny Foo Foo that team is doomed to fail before they arrive...

...I'm jus' sayin'!

Kevin's thoughts: ...dawn, this new dawn did not take away the hurt and sorrow from the friends and families who lost loved ones in this most recent school shooting... ...but this new dawn and every new dawn gives all of us a new opportunity to reach out and make a Spiritual difference in the lives of those we connect with everyday - we could just live our lives or we can deliberately better prepare ourselves and others for life in this world and a life forever more... ...what will we do with our new dawn?

Kevin’s thoughts: …okay, it’s killin’ me - Mike & Mike are still (two days later) showing, plugging and replaying their Halloween “gangnam” style dance video - I just want to watch and hear about ‘sports’ stuff – VT lost (badly) to Miami, Kobe Bryant went on TV and said (very) stupid stuff – Tebow may be (tragically) traded to Jacksonville and the NY City Marathon is in jeopardy (as it should be)… …all stories that should headline Mike & Mike’s show – but no, it’s (every 5 min) “Have you seen our gangnam video yet?”

I’m soooooo tempted to just switch over to the Lifetime Network and watch reruns of The View, Dance Moms or Project Runway in hopes that someone on (any of those brain dissolving) shows accidently uses a sports metaphor or references a sports team so I can get my sports fix this morning…

…it’s that or… …drop an empty (grape) jelly jar into a burlap sack, swing it over my head and smash it on a concert drive way, shake the broken glass into a blender with (10 oz) grapefruit juice (heavy pulp) and (2 oz) Texas Pete Hot Sauce, blend at high speed for one minute and gulp down in one drink…

…whichever is less painful – just say ‘NO’ to anything gangnam - I’m jus’ sayin’!

Kevin’s thoughts: …it’s killin’ me – I love to listen to (or watch) Mike & Mike In the Morning (Sports news) each morning – great updates, news, interviews, etc. – but (to my outrage), this morning they are (for Halloween) costumed up in ‘gangnam style’ to include a ‘gangnam’ dance video of themselves – it’s killin’ me – I knew we had stepped onto a slippery sloop when Greenie (Mike Greenberg) participated in Dancing with the Stars last year – now, this sloop lead us to a ‘gangnam’ flavored show and it’s killin’ me.

Never before have I felt more like a old grumpy Mr. George Wilson (of Dennis the Minus fame) as my (coveted) world of sports news crossed defining lines into (the painfully grotesque) world of ‘pop’ culture – it’s killin’me.

There must be some way to reverse this (tragically ‘errored’) trend towards the blending of ‘sports sanctimoniousness’ (yes, it’s a word) and the sticky/tacky visually painful gangnam culture – perhaps there are some sports penitence we could offer or pay to undo this gross direction of compromising the pristine world of sports news/talk – really… …it’s killin’ me.
