Susan Crawford on why US Internet Access is slow, costly and unfair

This 25 minute video is a good watch if, like me, you've always wanted to know why companies like Verizon, Comcast and Cablevision overcharge their customers for internet access. Since it was invented here in the US, I am not surprised, but at the same time, something this important a part of our lives, from needing it(most times solely) to search for jobs to needing it in emergencies, should not only be affordable, but more accessible as well.

' Susan Crawford, former special assistant to President Obama for science, technology and innovation, and author of Captive Audience: The Telecom Industry and Monopoly Power in the New Gilded Age, joins Bill to discuss how our government has allowed a few powerful media conglomerates to put profit ahead of the public interest — rigging the rules, raising prices, and stifling competition. As a result, Crawford says, all of us are at the mercy of the biggest business monopoly since Standard Oil in the first Gilded Age a hundred years ago.

“The rich are getting gouged, the poor are very often left out, and this means that we’re creating, yet again, two Americas, and deepening inequality through this communications inequality,” Crawford tells Bill. '

So cool!

Pride Easter Egg

Discovered a fascinating little Easter Egg while I was working on a spreadsheet in Docs. It turns out that you can fancy up your spreadsheets with pride colors! I've decided to use the spreadsheet I used to plan my trip to Europe to show you how it works. You can fancy up your spreadsheets one of two ways:

1) Type the letters P-R-I-D-E in each column on the top row, then press TAB.

2) At the end of the URL for the spreadsheet, type in &pride=true, then reload the spreadsheet.

As a spreadsheet junkie this made my day. Go ahead and try it!!

Taking a break from the Trekkie theme to offer this gorgeous space side view of our planet at night.  Help keep it beautiful, by buying local, not buying bottled water, and recycling!

Doodle: Franz Kafka

Story
Tagline
It's HIP to HIRL
Introduction
This page is designed to document and or plan each HIRL experience by plussers here. If you have HIRLed with a plusser and want it publicly posted, all you have to do upon posting the picture is to tag HIRL . If you do not have this page circled and are in the administrator's circles, either bring this to their attention, or hashtag #hirl over the posting. This way, your photograph is seen by others in your hometown who may want to HIRL as well! This will be a fun experiment, and will further bring plussers together from all over the world! So circle, hoop, embrace - whatever the vernacular - this page and let's preserve some memories together!

PS - Also, let others know about this page! Every HIRL should be documented here, and we might not be privy to others who have done so. If you know any others who have, just send a message to the page letting us know who and where the photo can be found. Thank you, and Happy Hirling! :-)

So, what exactly is a HIRL?

A HIRL in an acronym (a word formed from the initial letters of other words) stands for Hangout In Real Life.
A HIRL is a meetup in a real place with the real people. If you're a fan of twitter, you might have heard of the twitter version, also known as a tweetup. Some people still call HIRLs HIPs (which stands for Hangout in Person)

What would you do in a HIRL?

Well, if a HIRL is a coordinated HIRL, you might do things like organised photowalks. This is great if you don't know the city yourself and would like someone that's fairly local to show you the sights. You could of course jump on a tour bus if walking terrifies you - but chances are that it'll be cheaper to let your HIRL host show you round whichever city you find yourself in.
Also in organised hangouts, you might find that there can be organised gig's for showing off upcoming or established Google+ based artists to showcase their music, time to actually chat face to face with the people you've been chatting to over hangouts and occasionally meet the odd well-known face.
On less-organised hangouts, you can meet for coffee or a drink and chat with people you've hung-out with. If you find yourself in a city that you don't know, but you know someone that lives in the city, let them know... You never know, you might actually get to meet them!

How do I stay safe with HIRLs?

First off, always make sure that someone knows where you're going.
If it's an organised hangout, make sure they know you're coming so that they can make sure they wait for you if they're organising activities... especially if you end up running late.
If you're worried about showing up by yourself, take a friend! And on the other hand, expect other people to have another person at least with them... other than safety in numbers, it's also nice to have some moral support if you've never hung-out in real life before.

How to I start a HIRL?

Well, send out a message and see who'd be interested in your circles. You could also pop a message to a particular person if you're visiting a city. Also it's a good idea to keep in mind that just because people say they'll come, doesn't mean that they will... So keep a book (or a hangout-capable phone or laptop) handy instead.

Try to choose a setting that your guests and you feel safe. Public places with lots of people are a plus. Have a think about what kind of people you might have coming and how many people you think you'll be expecting and choose an appropriate place. If you can get half decent signal or WiFi in the place you're meeting up, you might get people involved through hangouts while you're HIRLing!

Also think about when you want to do your HIRLing. For example, in a mainly Christian country, a lot of people wouldn't HIRL through Christmas Day or Easter, so organising around big dates in the country are a good idea.

What about food?

Well, everyone has to eat! Why not have a look on Google for the restaurants in the area and if you can get any good deals or vouchers. If you go to a sponsored event, you might even get some free nosh.

And where would I stay, if I'm staying in the city overnight or a few days?

If you're traveling to another country or another city, you might be best either asking your host where's a good or good value place to stay. Or, if you're a super-savvy searcher-type person, run a few Google searches. You might be able to get discounts online and if you book early.

Anything else I should really think about?

Check out if there's any festivals or special days on in the place you're going. Not only to gauge what might be going on, but also how many people may turn up and how busy the place is that you'd be going to. Also, check out if there's any deals going on in the places you're going because of any celebrations. It's always nice to save money.
