There are fashions in art, and carefully laid out histories that link artistic movements together. And then there are the other paintings. Pretty things, that people hang on wall and like to look at without thinking very much. Except perhaps to remember clear rivers touched by softly draping willow branches, on warm summer evenings. Or perhaps spring days scented with flowers, and magical evenings lit by golden sunsets.

Travelling salesman for the souls in purgatory – from Montligeon

This week our match is from the pretty Perche region (south east Normandy, in the Orne). Here tucked within a gentle countryside of rolling hills, green meadows and timeless villages is a rather grand surprise. The imposing Sanctuaire Notre-Dame de Montligeon. It look very old, but is it? And why is it here in this tiny village? A mystery we were fascinated to uncover…
