Woo, COMMENTS!!

What must be taken into account when contemplating incidents like the recent Parisian massacre is that it likely won't achieve any practical effect. Is France going to order its citizenry to convert to Islam en mass? No. Is France going to sign some sort of peace treaty with ISIS to prevent further attacks? No. So what did the perpetrators really achieve? They hurt and killed people, just to prove the point that they were willing to do so. Lots of innocents have died, in a pointless demonstration of resolve. One hopes that diplomacy may yet yield a peaceful resolution to the situation mankind now faces, but it is hard to see how negotiations could pacify such thoughtless bloodlust, unless they follow a reckoning the like of which was delivered into the axis powers in the mid 1940s.

Misandry and Emmigration

It seems that the monster of sexist double standards has once again spread its ghastly wings over the rhetoric of a situation. One of the most common arguments against giving the refugees from Syrian and other nearby nations refugee status in Europe (which I disagree with for other reasons) is that they are not "true migrants" because most of them are young, able-bodied men.

This is, on the face of it, a blatant double standard, as this demographic should be neither more nor less entitled to any degree of consideration when issues of asylum are considered, but the problem runs deeper than that. "Young, able-bodied men". What is it about that subset of the global population that is so relevant? Let me think.... Oh yes, I remember now: THEY ARE MORE LIKELY TO BE DRAFTED THAN ANY OTHER GROUP OF PEOPLE!

Many of these draft aged young men are fleeing because the alternative is to be snatched up by some militia or other and ordered to participate in their activities. The radical factions in that region of the world are hardly likely to respect the notion of conscientious objection, nor do they conduct themselves honourably in battle. An able-bodied young man in this scenario has three choices: he will participate in immoral activities (potentially including the use of poisonous gas weaponry upon civilians); he will die; or he will flee from the area.

If a large quantity of young, able-bodied men had fled Germany in 1938, lest they be drafted into the war machine of the Third Reich, or if a similar phenomenon had befallen imperial Japan, would we call them immoral or cowardly? It is more likely we would herald them as courageous and virtuous.

It is not immoral to avoid serving in an army which has abandoned the rules of war. It is not craven to abandon a nation-state which bids its people to commit atrocities. Yet the Misandrist notion that young men are somehow more obliged to remain in their home countries in times of war than other citizens, is leading to a condemnation of people who have fled familiar fields due, in part, to a desire NOT to become killers.

Ultimately of course, accepting these asylum seekers into Europe will not solve the problem. Only when Iran and Saudi Arabia the nations most responsible for the wars in the region take the bulk of the migrant population, will there be an incentive to bring long-term peace.

Until then, remember that becoming this:

Is often an alternative to becoming this:

Small, error, the last line should have read 21st century not 20th century.
I have corrected it now.
