Thanks for attending the Get critiqued webinar this morning on night photography!
As promised, here are some tips on getting the best shots at night.  Please email me - enorris@aii.edu and I can send you a printable PDF of these tips to take with you on location.
Night Photography Tips
Remember night photography still requires light…  Here are some tips in getting the right exposure and sharpness with night photos.  Have fun and be creative with composition.  This part is mandatory!
Camera Set Up
-RAW format (good to get the most detail in the tones)
-Use manual exposure mode (camera meters to 30 seconds)
-100 ISO (yes lowest…  You are using a tripod and subjects are likely still so what is the difference in 1 and 5 seconds?)
-AWB – no perfect WB option.  Use what you get with AWB and adjust in Lightroom.
-use a mid to high Fstop (helps with sharpness of an image – try F8 and above
When shooting…
-Always Always Always use a tripod.  Except when you want crappy photos.  The playback screen can be deceiving but the monitor never lies!
-Use the camera’s self timer under drive mode (good for use up to 30 seconds) or a cable/shutter release if you have one or when exposures go beyond 30 seconds.
-Back away from the camera and tripod when exposing.  Don’t move a lot around the tripod when exposing.
If these camera features are available:   1 Activate long exposure noise reduction, 2- mirror lock up (1 second is fine).
-Ambient light in darkness causes high contrast where you may clip your highlights (like light from lampposts).  Be aware of this by checking playback window to see if the blinkies are happening.  Clipped highlights should only happen in specular highlights (think small areas like the shine off of gold teeth J).  Bracket your exposures as a result – at least .3 of a stop lower than the MIE.
If the camera has a hard time focusing due to low light put the lens on manual focus and focus to infinity.
Helpful tools to have in your gear bag:
•       Headlamp or high powered flashlight (for changing camera features, safety and focusing),
•       Tripod…  Always a tripod., ideally with a hook in the center shaft in case you need to weight it down if windy
•       Extra battery on cold nights or just in case!
