Are you attending the SIAM Annual Meeting (AN17)? If so, you may be interested in one of the Career Fair sessions being held Monday, July 10, 2017. The Career Fair is an interactive event at which you can speak with employers about working in various industries and find out what they look for in candidates. If you plan to attend, please submit your resume, so it can be provided in advance to the participating employers. Find out what employers will be there, how to submit your resume, and more: http://www.siam.org/meetings/an17/career.php

Why would a mathematician possibly be interested in studying the flora of a region such as the Horn of Africa, which receives very little rain throughout the year? Well, with the world’s population continuously rising, food sustainability is becoming an increasingly important challenge. In the latest issue of SIAM News, read about Mary Silber’s work in applying mathematical models to understand repetitive bands of vegetation in arid regions:

The past decade has seen an explosion of applications of algebra, geometry, and topology to the real world. As such, the SIAM community has voiced a need for a research journal to cover this emerging area, and we’ve responded. Newly launched and beginning to publish in February, the SIAM Journal on Applied Algebra and Geometry, led by Bernd Sturmfels as Editor-in-Chief, will showcase world-class researchers and their groundbreaking work in the field. Learn more about this growing field and new SIAM journal in our brand new animation! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-k9zIGu43A

Five times in U.S. history, and twice since 2000, the elected United States president did not win the popular vote. For decades, experts have said that extreme outcomes are possible with the Electoral College method of electing a president. What does the math say? Simple mathematical analysis illustrates that the Electoral College system could lead to wide discrepancies in relation to the popular vote. #mathematics #elections #popularvote #electoralcollege #math #election2016

Does dark matter actually exist? While astronomers assert that dark matter forms halos around galaxies, no one has yet seen this material or been able to study it. The elusive, invisible phenomenon presents an intriguing enigma. In the latest issue of SIAM News, Donald Saari presents mathematical analysis that compromises, if not eliminates, a standard argument for the existence of massive amounts of dark matter. #darkmatter #astronomy #math #mathematics #dynamics #dynamicalsystems #matter #darkenergy #space #galaxies #siamnews
