Alternating Great and Acceptable - Review of [REC]³ Génesis
The Spanish [REC] (2007) is my favorite horror movie of all time and I consider it to be a masterpiece within the genre. The sequel, [REC]² (2009), is on the other hand an atrocity and a movie I highly recommend people should avoid if they in any way liked the first one. You can find my reviews of the first two movies and my expectations to the third (and fourth) here: goo.gl/15QTD

Today I watched the third installment in the [REC] quadrilogy, [REC]³ Génesis (2012), (with the 4th movie, [REC]⁴ Apocalipsis, being scheduled to come out in 2013) and despite my hatred for the 2nd movie I had my hopes up.

The movie started out as I had expected and little to my surprise it was very quick and good at creating suspense in the special kind of way which I so very much loved from the 1st movie. The style and tone of the movie however changed a little bit into the movie, as well as it should in order not to resemble the 1st movie too much, and everything seemed like this would be a good, perhaps even great, movie.

[REC]³ Génesis has its ups and downs. It contains so many great aspects which should have made it into an amazing movie, but it just never gets there. There are more than a handful absolutely astonishingly beautifully constructed and filmed scenes where every single aspect just blew me away. But then movie turns around and presents a scene which most of all resembles some sort of comic relief which in no way should have been part of the movie if you ask me. In a few short scenes there were also incorporated some fantasy-like elements (the kind I so very much hated in the 2nd movie) in a very visual way which were not necessary for the story. There are more examples of smaller mistakes which for me took a potentially great, if not amazing, horror movie and made it into "just" a good movie.

[REC]³ Génesis has beautiful scenography, great acting, interesting and intriguing characters, decent character development, a good main story line, great effects (though a little over the top in one or two scenes), and overall great potential which unfortunately is damaged by several less-than-ideal aspects and scenes. [REC]³ Génesis is a good movie which could have been so much more.
