Not so fast on tearing down the old Sixth Street School, says the Geneva Historic Preservation Commission. "It still has the ability to be used as something else," chairman Scott Roy said Wednesday, explaining why the commission voted to deny a demolition permit.

Daily Herald photographer Laura Stoecker has a fan!
It has been said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. If that's true, Daily Herald photojournalist Laura Stoecker should feel honored by the work of Janine Webbles. The Batavia resident enjoys Stoecker's nature photography so much, she's created some paintings inspired by Stoecker's photos, including one she named "Laura's Barn."

Indian Prairie Unit District 204 fourth-grade teacher Susie Duval said she’s a hardy gardener who doesn’t wilt in the heat, but conditions got to her during a steamy first week of school and sent her to the hospital with heat exhaustion and then home for three days to recover. Duval was one of about 25 teachers and parents who made impassioned cases to the school board night for better solutions to the problem of excessive heat in schools without...

I can't help but think the Apple folks turned over graphic design responsibilities to a group of first-graders. The interface looks much less professional now. #fail   #apple   #ios7

Get rid of old electronics: check. Buy mums to beautify the front porch: check. Peruse Barn Sale for kitchenwares and other household stuff: Check. Doing it all in one trip to Randall Road in St. Charles Saturday? Priceless.
Expect traffic congestion more than usual Saturday morning on Randall Road north of Route 38 in St. Charles. The St. Peter Church Barn Sale is at the Kane County Fairgrounds, the county has its monthly electronics recycling drive in the parking lot of of the circuit court clerk's office, and the Pottawatomie Garden Club is selling mums in the circuit clerk's parking lot.

What would it take for you to shop at Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles? Or, store representatives, what would it take to get you to lease there?
The problem with Charlestowne Mall in St. Charles is that it isn’t the right size, a potential buyer told aldermen. But unlike the conventional opinions that it was built too small, Krausz Group thinks it is too big. “It is unusual to downsize, but what is important in a such a retail project is that it be the right size,” said Charles May, project director. “This could have been a successful mall if it had been built later and smaller.”

Check out the latest Moving Picture project.
Rebekah Gillette of Elgin beat breast cancer, and that same fighting spirit helps her inspire the kids she coaches at Spring Hill Gymnastics in Elgin. Even throughout her treatment, she showed up and pushed the kids to do their best. “For me it was I’m not going to let this stop me and I’m not going to let these kids down,” Gillette said.

Moral to the story: Stay on good terms with your neighbors?
A 59-year-old Geneva man was charged with felony marijuana cultivation after 69 plants were found growing on the side of his home Wednesday morning. Gregory T. Panzer faces anywhere from probation to seven years in prison if found guilty on various charges.
