I didn't notice the truck running the light until I watched the video. Probably because he, like I, had absolutely no practical reason to stop. And probably just as well, because it could have gotten ugly. Note how the cop was ready with a defensive answer the second I asked how many speeding cars he ignores.

Riding on the sidewalk isn't illegal in all of the District of Columbia, but it is illegal downtown, including this location. And this is around 2:30 p.m., when lots of people would be walking. I have ridden home on the sidewalks, around 11 or 11:30, on nights when the street is closed for cleanup after a festival or other event. (ILLEGAL! but the most sensible option under the circumstances.)

"The transition to metal"? That's not how it happened. When metal came along (first steel, then, more significantly, aluminum), it coexisted with wood, never overtaking it, right up until graphite overtook both.

The kids' confusion dovetails with my annoyance/wonder at old people insisting on writing checks, which of course is several hundred times as complicated as using a credit or debit card.
