In 1989, the first Z’Tejas was born in an old Victorian house on Austin’s historic 6th Street. Taking flavors from Spanish and Mexican cuisines and combining them with inspirations from Arizona, Louisiana, California, New Mexico and Texas, Z’Tejas created a rich blend of flavors that we’ve come to celebrate as Southwestern cuisine.

Very pleasant happy hour experience for our party of ten. Called in a reservation, so we were seated promptly upon arrival. Nice open table across from the bar. Not as noisy as I thought it would be so conversation was easy, no shouting required. The Waiter was very attentive right from the start and all the way through our two and a half hour stay. We ordered a variety of drinks and appetizers - chips, salsa, queso, guacamole, taquitos, catfish. All good, good for happy hour.

No chips and salsa for free. But the best and freshest tex mex food I've ever had.

AC was basically broken and the server laughed it off. We rushed to get out since it was literally 80 plus degrees inside. Food was hard to enjoy while I was sweating hardcore...

It is a good place to eat. And I recommend the street tacos and the Ancho fudge pie...

The menu looked so promising. On paper the flavor combinations looked absolutely mouth watering. When it gets into your mouth however, so disappointing. Jerk chicken salad, never had a jerk chicken where there was not a hint of cinnamon or spice at all. If oatmeal could be formed into chicken it would still have more flavor than the " jerked chicken" in my salad and my partners jerk chicken diablo pasta. Blackened catfish tacos with a jalapeño tartar sauce and southwestern slaw? Bursting with flavor right? The flour tortilla was the most flavorful ingredient on the plate. Well, that is one Friday night I can never get back.

Service is slow. Food doesn't blow you away. The Queso was average. Fajitas were something you could get at an Applebee's. Lazy food presentation. Margaritas were strong and good. Clearly this place used to be great but it's not that way now. Steer clear. Go to Eddy V's. You'll spend a little bit more but the food is much better.

Classy place. Our host said without reservation it might be 45 minutes, then proceeded to seat us at a small table near the entrance, which was fine for us. Would have been nice if they had more seats on the balcony with a view but oh well. Great food. Beer selection was nice but no malt beverages so I didn't get anything with alcohol. I am pretty picky. Ambiance was nice and waiter was great. Brought our food quickly for 6pm rush hour.

Z'Tejas was recommended by the concierge at our hotel. We had an appetizer, margaritas, entrée, and I ate half of a berry cobbler (more of a crumble). The trio appetizer, entrées, and complimentary corn bread were 5 stars. Margaritas at happy hour nicely priced and nice selection. Our server, Evan, was professional, friendly, and helpful. When we return to Austin, we will return to Z'Tejas and we will pass along this excellent review to local friends and family.
