I discovered that my blog got hacked on Monday. Ugh! Fortunately, the addition of a bunch of weird links only made it into about 15 posts. All of the stuff on the right, in green, is what was added by a hacker.

This is a good reminder to keep a full site backup, and implement two-step authorization.

I was just kidding, Matthew. You posted throwback photos before. Did you ever rock a full Afro? Someday I may get up the courage to post my throwback pic.

8407 Kitchen Bar has not only become my go-to restaurant on Fridays, after a busy week, but also a place I confidently recommend to friends and out-of-town guests. I have yet to see 8407 miss a beat with their food or service. Chef Matamoros and general manager Nancy Hart have a winner, for sure. If you visit, be sure to try the charcuterie. 8407 makes delicious sausages and duck prosciutto that are really delicious. Pair them with a nice selection of cheeses. The pickle bowl, deviled eggs, and calamari are winners too. The main courses change seasonally, but you can trust that the dishes will be prepared and seasoned well. It is best to book reservations, but you can take you chances getting a seat downstairs in the bar area, which includes four tables and a comfy area in the back with a huge couch that lines three walls. If you're a wine lover, Monday (typically a slow day for restaurants) is a great day to dine at 8407 -- all the wine bottles are 1/2 price.

I don't get all the 5-star ratings. Honestly, the food was marginal, at best. It's a bad sign when the best thing I can say that I had was a cold Sapporo. A lot of the dishes were offered some some generic brown sauce and mayonaise. Now, I know about Canadians and mayonaise, but this was ridiculous. In my mind, the chef did not honor the protein. For instance, we ordered the Yellowtail Carpaccio. The fish was not sliced well. The avocado that came with the dish was over-ripe and not firm and fresh. The Tempura Pork Loin was flavorless. The ribs were just decent, at best. The Tan Tan were pretty good, but nothing special. I have to also report that I don't feel like we got the best service, let alone food, while there. Every patron that came in or left got a big greeting. We were not given the same warm treatment. I don't want to throw race into the mix, but I have noticed looks, stares, and some noticeable discomfort by some folks in Vancouver (and Victoria). Perhaps people are not accustomed to black (American) tourists, but I certainly have noticed the looks, and can't help but wonder if some of the disparate treatment is a result of that. From being in Kingyo for nearly an hour, all of the white and Asian patrons in the restaurant were definitely treated differently -- and more welcoming. I would have given the restaurant one star, but the food was edible...if not good.
