One worker of a group of three whose mission it was to leave no rafter undusted in the tribune area of the Kololo Independence Grounds today, ahead of Sunday’s World Cross Country Championships in Kampala, Uganda.

Admit it. You didn’t know it was World Poetry Day today either until just now.

I decided that this image, snapped in Bogota, Colombia, the year before last, includes three poets. I’ll let you decide which ones are. In the meantime, listen to Tom Waits read Charles Bukowski’s ‘The Laughing Heart’.

If you were looking for some quick video footage illustrating what it’s like to land at the end of the world, you’re welcome. I was delighted to relive it. :)

A Chimango Caracara (Milvago chimango) at the Laguna Nimez Municipal Reserve in El Calafate, Argentina.

Framed by the southern shores of Lago Argentino, the country’s largest freshwater lake, to the west and snow-capped distant Andean mountains peaks to the north and east, the reserve's panoramic landscapes are dreamy, incorporating marshland, beaches and dunes into its 35-hectare expanse. All that just a kilometer or so from El Calafate’s busy town center, making this one of the finest easily-accessible birding areas you’re likely to come across anywhere. (And yeah, lots of pictures of really cool Patagonian birds. :) )

Check it out!

A Ljubljana sunset, but not tonight’s.

This was taken five years ago with my Sony Handycam which I dusted off this evening, hoping to encourage it to come out of retirement for my trip to Uganda later this week. Let’s hope that works out.

For the very occasional Saturday Portrait series, this is shot of a gentlemen who worked at a Bedouin-style camp where I stopped for morning tea after a sunrise drive to the Khor al Adaid, the inland sea that forms a border between Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

A migrant from Sudan, he’d been working at the operation —camel rides and rental also available– for just over a year. I hope he’s doing well.

Notes on an immigrant experience from a 24-hour memoir project. Please check it out -- would love to hear your thoughts.

It’s not everyday that you can watch an Emerald Toucanet, or aulacorhynchus prasinus, having breakfast while enjoying your first cup of morning coffee. :)
