Sounds like a wild ride
Oregon surfer Doug Niblack caught the wave of his life after finding himself standing on the back of a great white shark instead of his board.

Another article connecting the protection of biodiversity to poverty issues. Points out that there are very few empirical studies testing hypotheses linking the two issues, then shares a few examples of some of the few studies that do so.

A review by researchers with the Australian National University and published in the international, peer reviewed journal Climatic Change, found that large-scale restoration of native vegetation was the most frequently recommended action in the scientific literature to counter climate change effects on biodiversity.
Australian scientists say native vegetation must be restored to protect the country’s unique ecosystems from the impacts of climate change.

This is an outstanding essay on our culture, of competition with nowhere to go. Worth reading in its entirety.

Emerald Sea
A stunning video of the Aurora Australis taken by the crew of Expedition 29 on the ISS on September 17, 2011 as they pass from south of Madagascar to just north of Australia over the Indian ocean. Hope you all enjoy the show, I think +Ron Garan would approve ;)

Shell in Nigeria, in response to oil spills & threats to ecosystems, is, apparently sincerely, working with gov't & local stakeholders to not only protect biodiversity & clean up spills, but to promote sustainable use of biological resources to support local livelihoods. Why? Sound biodiversity mgmt on the ground translates into strong financial performance in the markets.

This is a good article because it talks about not only the fact that conservation can be good for a local economy rather than a cost we can't afford, but how to make that possibility a political realization in a society. Uses Costa Rica as its example. This can be done.

Intellectually curious dreamer
Introduction
I'm both intellectually curious about everything, and at the same time a dreamer, thinking how to imagine and do things differently. My curiosity is wide ranging, driven as much by a love of novelty as by a need to know what's going on. I'm an introvert who really really loves people. Like Silvia Plath put it, I either love people too much, or not at all.
