Be a low risk investor. Do some research on low risk investing, and more importantly FIND THE TYPE OF INVESTOR "YOU ARE". There tends to be a lot of money involved for real estate meaning you could potentially make or lose more money as well. If you aren't comfortable investing large amounts or are unable to at the moment, why not start small? There are even penny stocks which literally can cost pennies. There is always risk even in penny stocks, but you may be more comfortable investing in these because there is less overall financial risk; although more financial return as well.
Basically, anyone can and should invest. If you've ever spent money on "ANYTHING" or taken a class you are already an investor. There is a chance that class or product won't bring much value in return for the price. Being afraid is unrealistic and investing is unavoidable anyway. Start small, make mistakes, and learn from them. Chances are you'll be able to recover. Esp. If you're starting small. Have a good day and happy investing!
