My new Forbes article
Gartner predicts self-service BI platforms will make up 80% of all enterprise reporting by 2020. However, there's a misconception or illusion that self-service means self-sufficient. This article shares a soda fountain analogy to emphasize the correct approach to self-service analytics.

My new Forbes article...
Introducing and embracing a new data-driven paradigm often requires difficult changes to mindsets, skills, and behaviors. Strong executive sponsorship is almost always needed to overcome the organizational inertia that may resist and derail a transformation effort to become more data-driven. This article will review what qualities an executive sponsor for a data initiative should have and what the role's core responsibilities are.

By Jeff Dyer The recent mass murder in Orlando has many of us thinking about the problem of gun violence in America. Let me start by stating that the evidence that we have a problem is overwhelming. As a strategy professor at BYU and Wharton I look for causal variables in [...]

Here's my new Forbes article
Forrester reports 74% of firms say they want to be “data-driven,” but only 29% are actually successful at connecting analytics to action. Actionable insights are the missing link for companies that want to drive business outcomes from their data. This article defines six key attributes that make insights truly actionable.

Data is becoming more and more critical to our business success, but we still resist listening to it on a regular basis. This article explores an historical example of one man's struggle to introduce a simple, lifesaving data insight that rocked the established beliefs of his profession. It will explore what went wrong and what we can learn from his experience to help communicate our insights more effectively.

There’s no room for misaligned metrics in a world that is increasingly managed and driven by data. Business leaders must do their part to remove the strategic ambiguity that holds their organizations back from achieving more with their data.

Here's my new Forbes article...
Many people are nervous about relying too heavily on data for decision making. For some individuals, it can be unnerving to trust data that is difficult to fully understand or which doesn’t align naturally with their intuition. Frequently, this fear leads people to incessantly question the validity of their data. On the other hand, assumptions seem to get a free pass when data has to fight for every little shred of respect and acceptance. Poor as...

Data visualization expert Stephen Few said, “Numbers have an important story to tell. They rely on you to give them a clear and convincing voice.” With the influx of data and introduction of self-service analytics tools, we're going to need more people capable of communicating insights effectively. The next generation of data storytellers will not be limited to just analysts and data scientists. Everyone will need to know how to tell a story with...

We discovered our dog was limping this morning so we decided to take him to the Timpanogos Animal Hospital to have his paw checked out. They list their office hours from 8am-1pm on Saturdays. We got to their office at 12:30pm after driving from Lehi. They informed us that the vet had already left for the day, and there was nothing they could do (except make an appointment for Monday -- yeah, not going to happen). This was extremely disappointing as there were no other clinics still open and everything is closed on Sunday. Now our dog has to wait until Monday unless we used emergency care ($$$). If you're not going honor your office hours, you should change them. I'm not coming back to these guys as they are clearly unreliable and unprofessional.
