New Year's Day 2016 and it is time to sit down and think about goals to achieve. One of my goals in terms of my photography and creativity is a twist on an old concept. Many people start out with a 365 day project - produce 1 photo everyday for the year. This usually implies conceiving, shooting, editing and posting the photo online somewhere. I’ve dipped my toe in the water of this type of project in the past and believe me it is much, much tougher than it seems. I congratulate anyone who has completed or started that journey. My experience has been that not very long into the project you begin to not care so much about producing something that you are proud of or even care about, but are just trying to deliver everyday. I decided to shy away from this type of project. What I would like to do is shoot more.

So my NYs resolution is simply to try and take 30 photos a day. Consciously take photos everyday. That is it. No one but me ever needs to see them, but the idea is to get me to get off my ass (GOMA) and go out into the world and take photos. The rules are as follows and they are pretty broad and simple: (i) photos can be taken with any camera (phone, point & shoot, dslr, film) and can be taken with any combination of cameras in one day (ii) it counts if you take multiple shots of the same subject or multiple shots to be used in another project such as an animated GIF or video, (iii) video counts and each 10 seconds of video counts as 1 photo (i.e. one minute of video equals 6 photos). The idea is simple to shot everyday with the little pressure to make it a habit and something I readily think about. This is perhaps the same way a baseball play takes batting practice or a basketball player practices free-throw shooting. No one ever needs to watch those practice sessions they are for the individual player to struggle, enjoy, survive and learn from. So here goes my adventure.

So how about you? What unique goals or commitments to yourself are you making this time of year?

+Google Photos helped me put together some of images that I snapped over the Thanksgiving weekend. I'm working to learn these storytelling tools a little better because I think that they are underutilized.

I've always like the UI and functionality of +Google+ over the experience of Facebook. It is just that none of my family and friends are here so I get very little interaction. I'm going to go ahead and post more here to see what happens. I tend to be a loner in real life so perhaps Google+ is the social network built for me. : )

I had the chance to stop by the Desoto Central Market today. It is opening weekend for this new location. It is as if the food truck movement mashed up with a mall food court. For now it is about 4 independent food businesses sharing a cool location. Looked like there was space for a total of a dozen or so food places. The building itself has sat closed for as long as I can remember so it was great to see it repurposed to a cool space. #desotomarket

Enjoying the Sony A6000

I've been a Canon shooter for many years but have grown frustrated with how slow Canon has been to develop and ship a decent mirrorless camera.

So recently I decided to try out the Sony A6000 and I have to say that I am enjoying it more than I ever thought that I would. It has some very fun technology build into it at a very compact size (and price). It also has the manual controls that allow you to be creative if you want to be. Last week, I was out at a local park and discovered at very slow shutter speeds even a pigeon can look interesting. Sometimes just experimenting with your camera can create interesting results.

My brother turned me on to the podcast By The Way hosted by Jeff Garlin (of Curb Your Enthusiasm fame). In honor of the season premiere of Breaking Bad, this week's episode was with Vince Gilligan the creator of Breaking Bad.

I agree with Jeff Garlin when he says: "Television has replaced film as the go-to place for great work." I think that this is especially true for comedy or drama.

I don't drink "soda" any longer, but ironically I do drink soda water. Even with the internet, regionalism still exists, somehow this makes me happy. http://imgur.com/a/KQe4n
