From a boat-basket to a burning bush, Moses’ call to leadership is filled with everyday people and situations, all divinely orchestrated for God’s divine purpose. As we study the early years of Moses, we see a consistent theme of God raising up the unlikely and transforming the average with His anointing.
That’s me, and that’s you – common people, yet commissioned for a high calling. Let’s step into it together over the next 31 days.

Friend, have you ever spent time in Midian, like Moses? Have you ever experienced a season of humble dwelling, in a place far different than your exciting visions?

Maybe today we need to hear all over again that the seasons in Midian are not wasted or even for waiting – they are invaluable for preparing. After all, the passionate, Egyptian-killing Moses without his Midian would never become the Israelite-delivering, Red-Sea-crossing Moses at all.

he went out to his people // Exodus 2:11

Ever wonder who you really are? How to raise your voice? What to make of your little life in a great big world? Look no further than the injustices that burn your heart long after the lights are out. Those, friend, may well be the God-given passions to which He has called you.

Thank God for the battle lines that are painfully drawn, for though them we often find the strength to step into the calling God has for us.

"Maybe it’s not just Moses who has been “drawn out of the water.” And, it’s not just the beggar or the homeless person or the battered woman who needs to be rescued. It’s me. It’s you.
Until we settle that, we will never truly have compassion. For, only when we look into the eyes of the fatherless, the needy, the shamed, and the outcasts and see the distinct reflection of ourselves, but for the grace of God, we cannot respond with #compassion ..."

"Certainly, the question marks of life leave just enough space for God’s pen of purpose."

Someday God's greater purpose will be far, far more real than our emptied arms.

"When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter…" Exodus 2:10

"…So the girl went and called the child’s mother. And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, ‘Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will give you your wages.’ So the woman took the child and nursed him." Exodus 2:8-9

Did Moses’ mom ever question, ever weep bitterly over why God would even bring this baby into her arms, only to require she lay him down in the Nile? Did she question why she was even his mom? Did she doubt God’s good purpose in creating her son? ...

"When she opened it, she saw the child, and behold, the baby was crying. She took pity on him and said, 'This is one of the Hebrews’ children.'” Exodus 2:6
The use of the word “behold” stopped me while reading this verse. Why did it need to be pointed out with such emphasis that the baby was crying? After all, a baby who cries is not exactly worthy of a newsflash...

"When she could hide him no longer, she took for him a basket made of bulrushes and daubed it with bitumen and pitch. She put the child in it and placed it among the reeds by the river bank." Exodus 2:2-4

I read and reread these words, comparing them with the accounts of Moses in Acts 7:20 and Hebrews 11:23. Why does this account of baby Moses include so much about his mom and her actions, in contrast to the other accounts in the New Testament?...
