Look at all those hearts! East and South pass - what do you open?

Vote your choice and tell us why. Then, play this hand from West's position to see how it works out: http://skybridgeclub.com/play/compete/16-07-06/2/

A preempt is an opening bid or overcall made with a long trump suit and few points. Preempts are great! They make it tough for the opponents and you have the safety of all those trumps.

Let’s take that idea and see if we can use it elsewhere.

How can you tell when to deliberately bid higher just to stop the opposition making their contract?

Count trumps, not points.

Shape is so important. Not all 9 point hands are the same. Often you should upgrade shapely hands and downgrade balanced ones.

Long suits are a great source of tricks.

You get clues from the auction and the play all the time. If one hand shows out of a suit, stop and work out where all the remaining cards are.

One more trick in defence could make all the difference.

It is really important to look at the opening lead and try and work out if the lead is from strength. If you then decide there is a problem with too many losers, look for the best solution available to you.

It’s not normally a good idea to bid a slam missing two aces. But it’s not such a great idea bidding a slam when you have enough aces but not enough other good cards.

You have enough strength to respond, but what should you do when when East overcalls your best suit?

If you double East's bid, will partner think it is a takeout double or a penalty double?

Partner opens the bidding and you have 21 High Card Points!! Woohoo, we're going to slam! But in what?

Do you jump straight to slam or do bid Blackwood to ask for aces?

At first glance, this doesn't seem like the most exciting hand. But don't overlook the opportunity to practice "seeing" the unseen hands.

Based just on the auction and the lead, can you figure out West's hand?
