The chief's viral letter is praiseworthy, but it also merits caveats and qualifications.
Many here are now well aware of Metro Police Chief Steve Anderson's open letter published the day after Christmas on the news page of the Metro government website (and then in the Tennessean). Since it has gone national, many outside of Nashville have seen it, too.

"It's as if the North Nashville neighborhoods that will spread out beyond the outfield walls of First Tennessee Park are something the Sounds are trying to ignore or are ashamed of."
The Nashville Sounds rolled out Phase One of the predicted re-brand Thursday morning. This is completely reasonable with the new stadium and the new affiliation...

And it was a real town hall meeting.
Last night I left my daughter's school orientation events early to attend the "town hall" meeting at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Jeff St. I arrived 30 minutes before it was supposed to start. That was a good thing because the pews of the sanctuary were nearly full by 7:15.

One candidate for Mayor believes that a Ferguson (MO)-like event would not happen in Nashville due to the structure of government. I find that argument curious.

From last night's 3rd Annual Heirloom Tomato Fest & Square Dance in Bells Bend. Little bit of rain, but didn't deter dancers.

People on the north side of town realize that parking is starting to be a problem here. Our new neighbor, Nashville's minor league baseball team, did not address parking at their community meeting last night.
Just got back from the "community meeting" the Nashville Sounds and the Gobbell Hayes ballpark design team sponsored to announce progress and to show a "3D" video of the "ballpark experience". It barely lasted 15 minutes, and no questions or comments were allowed from the floor at the end.

If you are an observer of the Mayor's Office, this just never gets old. I laugh out loud every time I see it. It's a classic.

There are places in Nashville where parents walk their kids to school on uneven ground and streets due to a lack of sidewalks. There are places outside downtown where heavy traffic whips by inches from curb-side pedestrians without sidewalks. Yet, the Metro Council voted last night to approve to pay $18,000,000 for a sidewalk so that downtown lodgers can enjoy a chic stroll across the Gulch.

New Post on GenmaSpeaks
On Saturday, August 9, 2014, eighteen year old, Michael Brown, was killed by Ferguson, Missouri’s police officer, Darren Wilson. The cries of outrage at the lack of details after the shooting led to mass protests in the Fergu...

On Nashville's City Accelerator bid to deal with income inequality
The business of business has nothing to do with "addressing inequality". The business of business is to maximize profits, even if it means supporting or generating inequality. In the 1950s, businesses had to be forced to acknowledge the civil rights of African Americans.

What's going to happen to North Nashville's Whites Creek community?
Education advocate Anthony Cody recently tweeted a sentiment on another subject that applies to the recently launched community plan process in Whites Creek: "the test of a democratic process is how minority voices are treated". I attended Whites Creek's first community planning meeting last ...

The Sounds of silence. After months of lobbying for a new ballpark at Sulphur Dell, why is Nashville's minor league baseball team now loath to include the historic name on its new guitar-shaped scoreboard?
Apparently, they don't listen to the same fans that they relied on before getting council approval for a new ballpark. In the run-up to the council vote, the team's ownership, the Mayor's Office and the design team rarely mentioned the ballpark without the name "Sulphur Dell".
