History repeats itself. Meanwhile, in 1901...

"The French Catholics have not understood how to take part in the noblest movements of the century. We have not loved enough. Modern society has come into existence without us, and indeed in opposition to us. Instead of trying to help in the work of liberation, we have rather tried to gain supremacy over the age."

- Vicar-General Louis Birot

Death harbors no fear for the enlightened, for theirs is a path bright and free from the shadows of other men's minds.

"We'd like to talk to you about becoming a duck."

What atheists hear when you proselytize.

Anobium tessellatum: "a beetle that smashes its head on woodwork as a mating call. Also known as a DeathWatch, for the smashing sounds like distant ticking. Folks imagined it was The Reaper's pocket watch."

Featured on Shaun Usher's brilliantly diabolical blog "Letters of Note."

It is often said that those who don't know their history are doomed to repeat it, but in this case we're doomed if we don't. Follow David Niose as he explores America's secular beginnings and leads us to its inevitably secular future.

Introduction
So I wound up winding my watch in the wind along a winding road and got winded. So with wounded lungs, and a partly wound watch, I wound up lost, but what really got me wound up was I realized my watch was solar-powered.

You remember when you were a kid and you and a friend would race twigs in the gutter water that was flowing down the curb, and sometimes one of the twigs would get stuck but it would eventually get pushed because the current was so strong and then it would inevitably get stuck again, then you and your friend couldn't remember whose twig was whose so you just pointed to the one that was winning, but that twig started to get caught up a lot and you hated yourself for picking that one, and then the competition started to seem petty and you and your friend forgot your twig choices again so then you just began cheering for whichever twig looked like it was going to win and you felt better that you weren't competing anymore and that you were just enjoying the race? Well, I'm that first twig...
