Exposure to germs in childhood is thought to help strengthen the immune system and protect children from developing allergies and asthma, but the pathways by which this occurs have been unclear. Now, researchers have identified a mechanism in mice that may explain the role of exposure to microbes in the development of asthma and ulcerative colitis, a common form of inflammatory bowel disease.

yes, one doesn't know if/how the effect scales with exposure beyond normal - anyway 'normal' itself is diet dependent (for eg: the japanese apparently acquire the ability to digest seaweed from marine bacteria: http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v464/n7290/full/464837a.html). it is fascinating though that this is not increased immunity which seems more intuitive - but in a way a 'weakening' of the immune system that ends up being helpful in allergies

A male fruitfly will try to court a female by nuzzling her genitals, tapping her abdomen and singing with his wings. If all that fails, he drowns his sorrows in booze.
