Fly fishing for carp and actually catching them in the winter?  Come on, give me a break!  Carp hiberate all winter and don't eat, right?

The idea of tying trout flies conjures up peaceful images of sitting at an old wooden desk in a log cabin in front of a roaring fire.  Carp fly tying is for the more rebellious types: crack open a Colorado craft beer, turn on Def Leppard, and start your thread on a size 6 bonefish hook.  You're gonna need it.

Fly fishing for carp requires one to be determined, tenacious, stubborn, bull-headed, thick-headed, often times idiotic, and relentless on a normal day.  But how do you react when your favorite carp creek finally feezes over?  Do you hang it up for the season or do you wait for that one warm afternoon when the ice lets up just enough for you to get your fly in front of a fish?

Fly fishing for carp in Colorado is not for the faint of heart or for those who do not take failure well.  Once you master locating carp, presenting the fly, detecting the take, and successfully landing these huge fish you are going to want to document the ordeal for proof later.  If you fly fish alone, you better hone your selfie skills.  Use of hands, feet, and even mouth are usually required.

Throwing a pick-6 on the football field is never good.  But getting picked off on the mud flats when chasing carp can be very interesting.
