Great infographic, particularly the  "Four Stages of Dataset Grief" part.

Very cool! Tech adventurer George Takei visits the "city of firsts" and early capital of innovation. “Perhaps 128 no longer dominates the tech scene here, but building on its legacy, a new tech renaissance is happening.”
When George Takei — social media star, equal rights crusader, and the former helmsman of the starship Enterprise — asks you about the most interesting places to visit to get a sense for innovation in Boston, that's an e-mail you respond to pretty fast. Takei was planning a trip here in May to shoot several new episodes of his YouTube series

Interesting work from the Database Group at MIT CSAIL, which never met a foregone conclusion it didn't want to challenge.

How well do relational databases handle graph analytics, popular for Big Data application domains such as social networks and transportation networks? You might be surprised. Check out this research done at  +CSAIL MIT, in this blog post from +Alekh Jindal.

Intriguing question, CSE profs from top institutions (Brown, UWash, NYU, etc.) debate.

"Should We All Be Teaching 'Intro to Data Science' Instead of "Intro to Databases'? That's the intriguing question to be explored by a panel or professors at +SIGMOD 2014 tomorrow, 6/25 at 5:10 PM.  +Bill Howe of University of Washington, James Frew of +UC Santa Barbara BREN School, and +Tim Kraska of +Brown University debate with colleagues from Microsoft, UC Berkeley and NYU. Should be very interesting! ( #sigmod14   #panel1  )

Great read, by seasoned knowledge engineering and informatics executive +Mark Schreiber.

If your data is in "no fit state to analyze," then read Novartis' Mark Schreiber's "Big Data: Into the Trough of Disillusionment." You won't be disillusioned or disappointed. http://hub.am/1kNRzys

When Big Data becomes Pig Data: If businesses are going to do anything serious with Big Data (aka all the enterprise data sources available to them today), they have to be able to get it to work together without it eating their people and data integration processes alive. Oren Falkowitz, an expert in analytics-driven cyber-security,  talks about a new approach from Tamr.

What could you do with a unified view of your data? Join Tamr's free 7/15 webinar w/Area 1 Security's @orenfalkowitz http://bit.ly/TamrOrenWeb2
Hear how any organization can perform complex data integration tasks on semi-structured data with improvements in speed and accuracy.

You don't need to be a big company with a big budget to take a "big data" approach to your business. Just ask Brian Janezic, co-owner of Auto Wash Express, a chain of self-serve car washes in Tucson, Arizona - who built his own business automation and analytics solutions using FileMaker.

NY Times shares how a growing small business, Auto Wash Express, finds affordable ways to use #bigdata with a custom #iPad solution built using the #FileMaker platform: http://nyti.ms/1rT6al1
A wealth of information once available only to big corporations and online start-up firms is becoming increasingly available to small businesses.

It's been more than a month since DataBeat 2014, but I can't get this statement - from an industry panelist on Tom Davenport's panel about Enterprise Data Curation - out of my head:  "We haven't gotten to the hard work on Big Data yet."

ISTC researchers are presenting some fascinating new Big Data work at +SIGMOD 2014 this week in Snowbird, Utah. Tomorrow, (6/24) at 3:40 PM, Jennie Duggan and Michael Stonebraker of +CSAIL MIT
will present their paper "Incremental Elasticity for Array Databases." Scientists have become voracious consumers of Big Data. But the nuances of scientific databases (e.g., use of multidimensional arrays for spatial analysis) put a strain on traditional methods of elasticity, the process by which relational databases execute on a set of changing hardware resources provisioned to match their storage and processing requirements. In this work, the authors design and implement elasticity for an array database. ( #sigmod14  session #R7Px )

Introduction
Janice L. Brown specializes in using communications to position technology ventures, launch new companies and products, and develop industry thought leader programs. I have worked with technology companies since 1979 (beginning with Data General, Prime Computer and Computervision) and with health care, biotechnology and medical devices businesses since 1978. I've  been involved with Internet marketing and social media since 1990 (bulletin boards on CompuServe), and have helped launch online communities, a search engine and a browser.

When I'm not working with entrepreneurs, I am thinking about working with entrepreneurs - and sometimes reading, writing for personal enjoyment, cooking, watching films, learning languages, hiking and traveling to places that require at least two airplanes to get there. I also make citizen's arrests for poor grammar and evasive language.
Bragging rights
I am the luckiest consultant in the world. I have worked with some terrific entrepreneurs to help launch several dozen start-ups. My work has won numerous awards. More importantly, many of my clients stay with me for years, bringing me into their next ventures. And often becoming friends.
