Finally submitted a new board to BatchPCB to drive the 8x8 LEDs I ordered from China. Board uses a PIC16F726 and has UART and I2C connectors.

Those sample parts from Maxim (for the hidden RF bug detector) came in the other day. My god those parts are small. Three parts side-by-side are 1 cm.

Without realizing it, I must have been on a shopping spree. One thousand LEDs (http://www.sunledusa.com/NewProducts.asp?ID=21) showed up today. PR says "SunLED announces its new Ice Cube LED series with a deep frosted lens. The LEDs effectively eliminate the hot spot that interfere with achieving the perfect illumination of color. If your design is a canvas, then let these LEDs be your palette." Once again I need to come up with some boards and laser cut some cases.

My sample order from Microchip just arrived. I was intrigued by how simple this (http://hackaday.com/2011/10/18/throw-together-a-temperature-logger-in-minutes/) project looked. So I logged in to Microchip and requested MCP9701 samples. I also requested PIC16F917 chips (36 IO ports to attempt to drive a 16x16 LED display). Free parts, free shipping -- can't beat that.

The 5V DC CCFL Inverters (http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=18747+PS) I ordered from MPJA arrived today. Going to see if they can drive the neon digits that ThinkGeek donated to HacDC last year.
