makes you feel old ... and scary, first lose manufacturing (textile, furniture, electronics) soon technologies, science? at that level of salary, hard to win in US ...

http://www.businessweek.com/articles/2013-02-07/bgis-young-chinese-scientists-will-map-any-genome

"... the largest genome mapping company in the world ... 26-year-old team leader ... works 12-hour days ... At the factory in Shenzhen, more than 3,000 employees (average age, 26) ... 36-year-old executive director ... joined the project when he was just 22 and worked under BGI’s two founders, ... then 45, and ... 47. ... “We don’t need Ph.D.s to do this work,” ...  “You just throw them in,” ... its biggest strength remains all those cheap, highly educated analysts. ... An opening salary at BGI runs around 3,000 yuan ($481) a month."

does it sound eerily similar to higher-ed?

is the work good enough model so far with those ancillary at best "important college experience" going the way old dinosaur Panasonic, Sony, AMD, Kodak who didn't turn the ship fast enough when the old brands no longer can command premium price?  Some mich more nimble, obsessively focus design to the core mission institutions going to sell pass the traditional establishments?

"...@EdTech_HigherEd... 73% of Americans say a “no frills” option (courses/faculty but no dorms/sports) at a reduced price is a good option: http://ow.ly/fT07w ..."

"...@TLTGROUP... “Univs suffering from near-fatal 'cost disease'. http://bit.ly/XvNpFe ..."

that's super uncool if it is a policy, not a glitch

iOS 4 June 21, 2010, iOS 5 October 12, 2011? and cut off older devices already?

scary walled garden, you really have no control over your hardware+software. Give me Liberty, or give me shiny shiny Apple (or others) ...

"... users of older iPod Touches and iPhones stuck on 3.1.3 by choice or incompatibility with newer OSes can still update the apps they already have and transfer software from iTunes on a computer, they can't buy or install new ones directly from the device. ..."

I think the app thing probably has some good technical explanation, but you are right - Apple maintains tight control over your software and you are expected to upgrade. I recently tried to downgrade an old iPhone back to 4.x so I could use it for testing. Apple wouldn't let me do it, I'm stuck on 5. Looks like I'll have to try and hack it.
It looks like there's good evidence to suggest that this isn't an issue for most people:

finally, time for schools to do something
http://www.ben.edu/news/2012/lecture-free-college.cfm

Lectures are so boring these days, make you wonder why can't i watch that as 45/90 min. videos instead if i am not doing anything in the classroom (and catching the flu/cold watching the kids in front txting under the desk)

so sad, only in China ... posting pictures of store that sells dog meat would get likes in forum.  Would have been a fire storm in US. (Warning: disturbing graphics images)

Ooch.  doesn't sound like what high-ed supposed to be, more like poorly run corporations.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/story/2012-06-24/college-debt-burdens-graduates/55784174/1

"...
Higher education costs have outstripped inflation for the last 30 years, experts say, mostly because of dwindling government aid, more expensive housing and academic buildings to attract students, and more administrators.

The costs are being passed on to students and their families, who find themselves falling deeper into debt as the tuition bill climbs.
...
Glenn Harlan Reynolds, law professor at the University of Tennesseem and author of "The Higher Education Bubble."
...
cites another reason for higher tuition: "administrative bloat."
...
"To be fair, some of (those positions) are required by federal law," he said.

But the more prevalent reason is "bureaucratic empire building," Reynolds said.

who would have known ...
