Improving Patient Care

No matter where your nursing career takes you, one element stays the same and that is to provide the highest quality of care. Nursing, however, is a very demanding profession filled with obstacles ahead. Overcome challenges and improve patient care by taking these advices into heart.

Be Aware of Your Body Language
Conversing is not the only way to communicate. At times, the way you act speaks more. Be aware about how you approach each patient. Make sure to smile, make eye contact, and orient your body towards the patient when visiting. These simple acts show attention and compassion.

Treat Every Patient as an Individual
Nursing care requires you to deal with a lot of patients. And because of it, sometimes you can lose touch of a patient. Instead of building a connection with the person you take care of, you treat each one as a statistic. Engage in meaningful conversations and foster good relationship with your patient. Simple efforts such as calling patients by their name, greeting them, and asking how they are doing can help improve care.

While clinical skills are paramount in the field, this alone does not make a great nurse. Follow these tips and become a better nurse with each day that passes by:

2 Essential Principles Every Caregiver Must Understand

Learn as much as you can about the person you are caring for

If you’ve taken the responsibility of caring for a loved one, the first thing you should do is to learn as much as you can about the person’s disease and what to expect from it. Otherwise, you’ll be unprepared and incompetent.

Imagine going into war without a battle strategy in mind. This is actually what you are doing if you do not take the initiative to do some research. You will be better at anticipating what your loved ones will need if you understand what they are going through.

Care for a person the same way you want to be cared for

Put yourself into your loved one’s shoes. How do you want to be cared for? By trying to be in his/her place, you can come up with ideas on how to better care for your loved one. Caregiving can sometimes be overwhelming, and it is during this time that you should be more compassionate and patient.

When caring for a loved one becomes more complicated due to complex conditions, ask support from trained professionals. For assistance, call us at 305-687-7714.

3 Ways to Improve Nurse and Patient Relation

A nurse’s relationship with patients is crucial. The following are ways you can foster a promising relationship:

1. Practice reflective listening. When a patient talks, simply listen. Allow the patient to speak their heart out without interruptions. Then afterward, echo what you heard back to the person. Reflective listening is an excellent way to make patient’s feel valued and cared for.

2. Be careful with your body language. Actions speak louder than words. Patients are particularly keen about how their responding healthcare professional act. Looking anywhere but directly at the patient and turning your body away from the patient are few of the many ways that can instigate discomfort and distrust.

3. Follow through promises. When you make promises such as to check on a patient at a specific time, make sure to follow through on what you said. This helps build credibility and trustworthiness.
