Today the 24th of Tevet marks the 200th Yahrzeit of Rabbi Shneur Zalman of Liadi (Imperial Russia) the founder of Chabad Chassidism.  Also known as the Alter Rebbe.  One of his famous teachings is ..... "A little bit of light dispels a lot of darkness."   I've always loved this analogy.

The "ways of Chassidus" are that all Chassidim are to be like one family, with affection, as Torah teaches. Chassidus is vitality. Chassidus is to bring life and illumination into everything, to shed light even on the undesirable - to become aware of one's own evil exactly as it is, in order to correct it.

This 200 Sheqel note marks the Rebbe's 200th Yahrzeit!!!!

If you thought the Sylvester in my title was a cat you would be wrong ..... Sylvester is the Germanic name for the Goyische Holiday of New Year's Eve!!!  Why is it thus called?

Ellis Island opened on New Year’s Day 1892 and welcome over 12 million immigrants before it closed its golden doors. The first passenger processed through the new immigration station was an Irish girl named Annie Moore. Traveling with her two younger brothers, Annie crossed the Atlantic on the S.S. Nevada to join their parents in New York City on this day in 1892.  Many, many Jewish girls followed suit too as they struggled to escape pogroms in Europe.  Ellis Island was one of the places I visited with much pleasure on my first trip to NYC.  It's musuem is poignant for sure!!

"We light candles in testament that faith makes miracles possible." ~ Rabbi Nachum Braverman. It is Zos Chanukkah .... the Eighth Night.  Chag Chanukkah Sameach!

It is Zos Chanukkah,  the eighth and final day of our festival of lights. The golden candles twinkling from every window and doorway near my home as a child always reminded me that HaShem has the power to bring light into any darkness. HaShem changes people’s destinies all the time and this idea has carried me and never lessened throughout my life to date. Throughout the ages, Chazal have whispered that this mystical eighth day, called Zos Chanukah, has the power to change destinies. The Ohr Ha'Ganuz is revealed in the Chanukkah Candlelight ...... A time of Miracles!!

CHAG CHANUKKAH SAMEACH  & SHAVUA TOV!!!!!!!!

It's the last time in our lifetime, guys ..... the next repetitive date will apparently be 21.01.2101. (There can be No 13.13.13!).

I have lived on 01.01.01 and 02.02.02 and 03.03.03 etc right up to 11.11.11.  And I have lived through a total eclipse of the sun (although I didn't really see it from Ireland!).  A Change of Millenia, a change of Century, many lunar eclipses, blue moons, harvest moons and other astronomical phenomena.  I am also the generation either just preceeding Moshiach, or he will reveal himself in my days, B"H.  What a priveleged life I've led ....... (although it doesn't always feel like it).  I moan too much!!
