Just finished the machining and assembly for a sensor "pod" for my latest robot project, mounted on the front, detecting obstacles so (hopefully) it won't run into things. I wrote more (plus links to more pictures) here: http://www.bobandeileen.com/
Photoresistors are sensitive to light levels, and when combined with a light source like an LED or IR emitter, might be able to detect objects based on reflection. Or might not, depending on the available light conditions (this is for a robot intended to roam outdoors). I suspect direct sunlight would wreak havoc. I really want my robot to avoid trees. :^)
