Just finished the machining and assembly for a sensor "pod" for my latest robot project, mounted on the front, detecting obstacles so (hopefully) it won't run into things. I wrote more (plus links to more pictures) here: http://www.bobandeileen.com/

Photoresistors are sensitive to light levels, and when combined with a light source like an LED or IR emitter, might be able to detect objects based on reflection. Or might not, depending on the available light conditions (this is for a robot intended to roam outdoors). I suspect direct sunlight would wreak havoc. I really want my robot to avoid trees. :^)

Eileen and I were in Whistler the last few days, had great weather and we took the opportunity to enjoy a fabulous dinner at Umberto's. My starter (tuna and avocado) was tasty and beautiful.

Just got one of those phone calls from a fake computer technical support call center. The caller "Nancy" advised me that their systems had detected malicious files on my computer, and are calling to help me remove those files. After asking "Nancy" about the weather and all sorts of useless things I got bumped to her supervisor "Adrian" who was definitely going to be able help me. I pleaded that "Nancy" had not been very helpful and she needed to be reprimanded. After a few minutes of this silliness I asked him how I would know that he was authentic, after all I'd seen stories like this on the news. Just as he was going to give me his customer care number, to prove he was authentic, the line went dead. Oh well, those malicious files will have to stay on my Windows computer. Oh wait, I don't have a Windows computer...

It is amazing that anyone falls for this nonsense but apparently its much more common than you think. Sophos Naked Security has some interesting and useful information about this stuff (disclaimer: I work for Sophos, but you probably already know that).

I have been SO tempted to troll these lot & record the call, but I'm not always willing to have that fight at home. It's much lazier to just mute the ringer.

Eileen is teaching at Capilano University this fall, the course is "Character Creation" - create characters that pop off the page. She is so clever!

Saw "The Debt" today - amazing film, great acting, superb script. Why aren't all movies this good? Seriously.

Ha ha this made me laugh. Eileen got one of those "Microsoft tech support" phone calls at home today. After the pitch, she responded with something like "this is a scam, you should be ashamed of yourself". The response? After a long pause, it was "f*ck you" and a hang up. Win!

MacBook Pro with 8gb of RAM is so superior to one with only 4gb of RAM. Amazing how cheap 8gb is these days. Even makes Win7 in Parallels tolerable. Now back to the robots.

4gb on the MB Air is ... well... its brain is moving faster than mine is, so y'know... why spend more on RAM (also, not an option on this machine.)

Just finished watching the director's cut of Blade Runner (the version without the running monologue from Deckard) - still not buying the idea that Deckard is a replicant.

Supposedly only Ridley Scott was in love with the idea of Deckard maybe being a replicant. Everyone else involved to bring the character to life (writer, actor specifically) were not so enthused. There is actually very little in the film to support this theory.

Oh Google, why did you think "Google Instant" was an improvement? Sort of like interacting with mildly retarded people with ADD. How annoying! Finally got fed up enough to turn it off.

Joelle Anthony is giving away a signed copy of a CD of the music behind her debut book, the delightful violin notes from Sarah Tradewell!
