Bets!   Take your bets, that copyright will get extended again  in 2018.

"What is entering the public domain in the United States? Nothing. Once again, we will have nothing to celebrate this January 1st. Not a single published work is entering the public domain this year. Or next year. In fact, in the United States, no publication will enter the public domain until 2019. Even more shockingly, the Supreme Court ruled in 2012 that Congress can take back works from the public domain."

This text editor by Theo Sanderson.popped up in my feed; it limits the user to the 1000 most commonly used words in the English language.  There is a bit more about it here: <http://splasho.com/blog/2013/01/17/a-bit-more-about-the-up-goer-five-text-editor/>.   In the second article, several scientists find themselves attempting to describe what they do, in those thousand most common words.

The question this makes me ponder, given the amount of jargon in the library field, are we able to effectively communicate what it is that we do as a profession and how our profession works?

A follow on thought, would having this sort of tool change how you write?

I have to try this. "Most common" is an idea, but "most basic" is another. Ever seen, e.g., "The Bible in Basic English"? 800 words. Does it let you tweak your own list? (Guess I'll find out in a minute.)

Did Glee Rip Off Beloved Internet Troubadour Jonathan Coulton?
Beloved icon of the internet Jonathan Coulton has some questions for the tv show Glee as they come out with eerily sound-alike of his 2005 classic.

The Curmudgeony Librarian
Introduction
Christopher Erickson is best known as the Curmudgeony Librarian, the voice behind news site CLNN.INFO and the list owner of the Phase II NexGen Librarians mailing list.

With his startling deep grey eyes, and melodious well-resonant voice, he's been known to distract even the most attentive of introduction writers...
...and the beard!  Oh that magnificent beard!

Um... er... So. Yes.  Christopher likes to dabble in writing, photography, exploring, creating, and communicating  But careful, no smack talk or like the shirt says he'll shush your ass.
Bragging rights
One of the original [Adjective] Librarians on the web. Coined the word curmudgeony.
