From Mainstream, Penn State's Sustainability News: Penn State is playing a critical role in training the next generation of scientists to address entomology issues. Penn State's Center for Pollinator Research, directed by entomologist Christina Grozinger, helps prepare students to collaborate with diverse stakeholders. "I learned from researchers across a wide spectrum in entomology, ecology, the social sciences and other fields, who looked at things from different angles," said Elina Lastro Niño, apiculture extension specialist at the University of California, Davis.

From Mainstream, Penn State's Sustainability News: Last month was the hottest June on record and more than a year's worth of global monthly temperatures broke records. These all-time highs and other aspects of climate change will be the focus of a Facebook Live event featuring @MichaelMann, Distinguished Professor of Meteorology and Atmospheric Science. Those who join the event by visiting the @pennstate Facebook page on July 15 will be able to pose questions. “I want people to feel empowered to engage in this discussion about one of the greatest challenges we face as a civilization,” said Mann.

From Mainstream, Penn State's Sustainability News: While building a vehicle for the Society of Automotive Engineers’ International Supermileage Challenge, Penn State Behrend senior Tyler Dorsch came to a realization. The team has done well in Dorsch's four years at Behrend but had never managed to eclipse its first-place finish from 2013, the year in which the team designed a car that traveled 1,290 miles on a single gallon of gas. Until last week. Behrend's Club finished second in this year's competition, with the vehicle traveling 2,528 miles on one gallon of gas.

From Mainstream, Penn State's Sustainability News: From 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, @Penn_State will conduct its annual test of University Park’s capability to reduce its electricity load when called upon during national or regional power emergencies. Last year’s test reduced the power load by 31 percent, about 10 MW, during the test hour. All University employees and students are asked to turn off all unnecessary lighting, office equipment, coffee pots, dehumidifiers and air conditioning. University offices should stay open and operate in a normal manner while reducing their consumption of electricity.
