Gov’t operated TeleSUR reported on an April 1st fire at a daycare center within a housing ministry building in the Chacao district of Caracas--there were supposedly 89 children there at the time. President Maduro later repeated that claim and decried that as an example of ‘right-wing violence.’ The opposition produced a video in which it claims the daycare center was empty at the time, and the fire itself might have been set by gov’t infiltrators (a claim which often surfaces when opposition members supposedly destroy property). To support the latter claim: An image used by TeleSur (and other gov’t friendly outlets) as well as Maduro himself during his speech shows a couple with their child, supposedly carrying him away from the daycare fire. That image, however, was credited by Reuters as unrelated to the fire (01:49), but in fact showed a Venezuelan couple and their child being dispersed by tear gas during an opposition march held by former member of congress & oppo. figure María Corina Machado. Her April 1st march attempt to the national assembly fell apart on the same day as the daycare fire. Just call him Citizen de Blasio. An extensive profile by the New York Times this week of New York City mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio has, of all things, inserted Nicaraguan politics into what was already a colorful enough contest.
