I am a bit puzzled by +Jeff Gothelf article on designers as agile leaders.

First he says, that agile teams are self-organized and therefore do not have a need for a traditional project manager. Then he argues that therefore often a developer takes the lead and concludes with the argument that a designer could be an even better leader than a developer.

Then he continues that designers are good in discussions about customer value and experienced in engaging the customer about work in progress. He ends with the argument that designers also have lots of facilitation skills.

So Jeffs suggestion seemed to be that a designer is an ideal ProductOwner / ScrumMaster in one person and therefore a natural leader of the team. I'm highly sceptical of that. To me that rather sounds like bringing back the good old project manager role. And why should this be better than having a servant leader like a Scrum Master or a team that can truly hold any leadership functions as a team.

On another note, I had to smile (being reminded of a few painful experiences I had with designer) while reading the sentence: "Designers do this well. [...], having spent years defending seemingly subjective design choices to stakeholders, clients, developers and executives." I so remember a few meetings where designer defended design choice very strongly and they remained highly subjective to me ever after (and unfortunately hard to implement).

What would it be like if everyone at your office knew what everyone else earned? On today's show, we hear about a company where salaries aren't secret.
