"Gaza, the boy who will be left alone after the war"

by Khaled Juma an author and a poet from Rafah Gaza. 05/08/2014

This aggression will end, today, tomorrow, in a month, it will end, the murderous machine satiated by corpses, houses, roads, electrical posts , agricultural land, hospitals and NGOs buildings would stop. Those who were surprised to be still alive would go treading about slowly with eyes that do not see well in the sudden light, they would start rediscovering their surroundings; in another word another aggression would start.

The first thing they will notice is the distance that could be seen, it is the furthest ever ,no houses no trees are there to hinder the horizon , destruction, destruction, destruction , huge spaces of rabble in each corner , tons of stones, dislocated windows, doors wood , glass , buildings iron bars , wall paper , houses entrances , kitchens marble , refrigerators , washing machines , gas ovens , kitchen cupboards, kitchen utensils towelettes tools, books , pens , clothes, children's toys, all this mixed up in a strange composition in a way never seen before. People would search for the homes, perhaps it was here, no, not here, I think it was a bit to the left, no Haja your home was in the other block seventy meters away, I just came from there, oh son I swear it looks like ours, the youth would laugh: I know Haja after the plane's missile all houses look alike, all the same rabble.

When people start to wake up from the geographical shock, they would start looking for their relatives, their children first, heir brothers and sisters second, after that friends and acquaintances and so on till the vendor of sweets in front of the school's gate , they would be startled, speechless they would become , habitants of Gaza had suffered the loss of 1% of their population between injured and martyr, considering that each person knows in average 100 other persons, it becomes certain that each person in Gaza would know at least one of the injured , the martyred , or an owner of destroyed house. They would start asking how they were injured or martyred and their whereabouts when the house was destroyed. Details would get mixed up in the askers mind, he would retell confused stories and get corrected by another, no it was Mohammed who got stuck in the house when it was destroyed, Ahmad was martyred when he could not find his way out because of his blindness, they would then cry together and say: Allah is sufficient for us and He is our Guardian and they would go on living a half amputated life from an already half amputated life.

In days and weeks or months to come, depending on the number of martyrs waiting to be found, an official list would be made, people would come to know the unknown martyrs, a body might get different name, a mother would cry her remaining time on a grave containing her son's foot, the head of her neighbor, the hand of her husband, thinking all the time it is her son's grave. Kids would look for their friends and they would have gaps in their memories, they would go looking for homes, schools, and they would ask some hard questions, parents would get angry at them, and silence them in some way that goes like: It is not the time for these silly questions. Indeed it is never the time.

Time would go by, after all this loss the disaster would settle in people's souls, at the beginning they would say, we would go back to our normal life, they would discover that their life was never normal to begin with. Normal life is to meet with friends , ok no friends, to live in your home , ok no home, to go pray in the mosque, ok no mosque , to go to school, ok no school, to kiss your mother's hand in the morning, ok no mother and no morning , to water the orange tree in the small garden , no tree, to play with your children at evening, ok no children , people would realize that life is no more life and that it is still early to think about electricity ,water , gas , Gaza had simply and literally as was described by Ahamad Balousha thrown back to 2014 B.C.

Time would go by even more , people would realize that all those who cheered and danced and asked that Gaza resist, and put her in gods place , they all went back to their lives, and that the aggression on Gaza had become a mere date striped of all its sad human value, it will be written, the aggression had started from till , number of martyrs ... For the people of Gaza , they would start from a Siberian minus 100 Celsius , they would have to struggle a thousand year to get to zero.

Time would go by, injured who are able to heal will heal , those who stayed in coma , or whose limbs had gone with those who had gone, those would live the rest of their lives without hands , without legs without hearing , without seeing , they will stay in their universe , a passerby might ask ten years from now : how did you lose your leg, and before the one without the leg starts to answer , he would turn his face and get busy with some other thing , those would become handicapped , they won’t become heroes , a man would think a thousand time before marrying his daughter to a man who lost his leg in the war, and a girl would think a thousand times before responding to a look of admiration from a man without hands, life for those would en up being the looks of pity from others and almost everybody would forget the reason of their wounds.

Time would go by, and more injuries would be discovered in the city's body. People would rediscover things that were not important before, like the wedding ring that a woman has put on the washing sink before leaving the house in a hurry, a little girl’s diary, which she considered her best friend in the world, a shirt giving by a father to his son then died, a heart shaped cup, a gift from a boy to a girl before getting devoured by a missiles, millions and millions of details that people will discover how empty life is without them, little parts of them would die with each missing object.

People would realize that the crisis during the war was not properly apparent , other crisis would start appearing , Children’s fear of all sounds , their fear of the planes even civilian ones , their shouts and their nightmares when they sleep , ghosts appearing to them even awake , people would realize that Gaza is not the city they once knew, the sea is not the sea , the sky is not the sky , the land is not the land , and this war would continue much longer than the predictions of a political analyst , a fortune teller , or a palm reader....In the end when all this is over, people would realize that the martyrs did not come back from the dead , and that the aggression had not stopped when the planes, the tanks, the ships the canons had stopped firing , in reality it was precisely then that it has started. *Haja is a respectful way to call an old woman in Palestinian Arabic*Translation by Amer Elhabbash

Please find here a serious msg from a palestinian
I want to share a message writen by our palestinian brother Tamim Barghouti, please read it with open hearts:

"To anyone working with ISM (International Solidarity Movement), BDS (Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions),IHH (Humanitarian Relief Foundation/İnsani Yardım Vakfı), Al-Awda (European and American Chapters) and any Palestinian or pro-Palestinian organization worldwide...we MUST be sending convoys by sea to Gaza NOW. As many boats as possible belonging to as many countries as possible MUST head towards Gaza, Israel cannot repeat the Mavi Marmara incident with 50 countries all at once. Israel thinks it can kill Palestinian civilians with impunity to break their will into accepting the siege by land and sea. The Egyptian and Israeli governments won't concede a maritime port to the people of Gaza, so such a port must be forced upon Israel by international grassroots popular action. Time costs lives. Egyptian sponsored negotiations won't end this war...but WE can".
