What can I say to the unemployed and despairing?
When hope is lost depression takes its place, at which point it becomes a battle for their soul/spirit. The best cup filling way I know of to fight back is to volunteer. Ideally someplace where lives are at stake, or where they can help break the cycle of poverty, such as ‘at risk’ youth, a shelter or food bank.
It doesn’t need to be complicated help to be fulfilling. But, on the other hand, many programs are desperate for volunteers to help with ESL or basic and advanced math. All hospitals and community health centers need volunteers.
As the self-esteem increases, hope can return which can help drive away the depression. The only real risk is that it can become so cup-filling that they’ll be hooked for life! But please, no more ‘encouraging platitudes’ – at some point they just make the person angry despite any good intentions.
