A musical blog for your warm May weekend: On this, the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and San Francisco's #SummerofLove, an experience I immortalized in my new novel, "Voices": The April 1967 day Paul McCartney came to Haight-Ashbury, sought out Jefferson Airplane, and previewed the incredible song "A Day in the Life" -- as told by the Airplane's Marty Balin, my inspiration for "Voices".

The Write Stuff: Holiday Greetings, publishing news, and books for your holidays

December 2016

Welcome to the Holiday Season! Hope everyone has had a good year, and you’re making plans to gather with family, friends, and loved ones, or heading off to the perfect holiday vacation, books in hand.

Speaking of which … it’s been a monumental 2015 at Word Journeys. Releasing and touring ‘Just Add Water’ was the book publishing highlight of the year, and now, the second edition of ‘Writes of Life: 366 Exercises to Fulfill Your Writing Life’ is out. That, and watching a dozen clients’ books published, writing the American Music Awards event publication, working with wonderful clients, watching the German-language launch of Just Add Water at the world’s largest book expo, the Frankfurt Book Fair, another year of awesome articles at Innovation & Tech Today magazine, helping with two screenplays … the life of a writer can be exciting, indeed.

We have a few ideas for last-minute holiday shopping…

For the holidays, we’re offering Just Add Water, When We Were The Boys and The Write Time in a signature gift package. For $40, plus $5 shipping, you get all copies, signed. This is $20 off the combined cover prices! Email with your name and address, and we’ll get back to you. We take checks and PayPal. Or, you can get separate personally signed copies of:
• Just Add Water: $20 plus shipping
• When We Were The Boys: $15 plus shipping
• The Write Time: $17 plus shipping

 THE WRITE TIME, Second Edition
I spent 15 years developing the 366 writing exercises that you find in the Write Time: 366 Exercises to Fulfill Your Writing Life. They cover every genre and every type of writing. They have been used in high schools, colleges, MFA programs, writers’ groups and retreats nationwide. Plus, there are motivating and insightful quotes from your favorite authors, more than 125 of the best writing website URLs, and other bits of fun. Your writing need a kick start? You want to write but don’t know where to start? Look no further — I guarantee an end to writer’s block with this book! If you purchase by December 25, send me something you wrote from one of the exercises, and I will give you a free evaluation!

WHEN WE WERE THE BOYS • Expanded E-Book Edition
What’s better than reading an edgy, raw, no-holds-barred account of a world headlining rock and roll tour? Catching the stories behind the book! We do just that with When We Were The Boys, as Stevie Salas recounts his year of touring with Rod Stewart both in print and in video interviews with Emmy Award-winning producer/director Ken Kebow. The enhanced e-book contains video and audio clips, including a reunion of Stevie’s first band, This Kids, and a great conversation about the Rod Stewart years with he and his best friends, Allen Carrasco and Dale Lawrence. Your Kindle reading will transform forever when you download this! Even if you have a print copy, you’ll want to check this out:

Clay Marzo’s inspiring story of overcoming Asperger syndrome (highest functioning level of autism) to become one of the world’s most electrifying surfers continues to resonate throughout the world. We’ve become a fan favorite of the surfing and autism communities, as well as those who know an autistic person or their family. This is not only a story about a surfer who has overcome serious challenges to become great, but a heartwarming story of the power of a mother’s love. You’ll see what I mean. It’s available at all chain and independent bookstores, and also on audiobook through (BTW, the audiobook was read by one of England’s top stage actors, a major stroke of genius on the part of publisher Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.) Or, if you want a copy signed by Clay and I, email

Have a wonderful holiday, and make writing and/or reading a major part of it!
