Ann Hill Duin and I have received a grant to use Google Glass in our classrooms at the U of M. The following journal entries track progress to date.

Calling UMN OIT Help because I can't log on to UMN Wifi. While looking for solutions, find this note from Google:  Some Wi-Fi networks require an extra authentication step via a website before connecting to their network. Glass is not capable of properly displaying these websites at this time and does not currently support connection to these networks, or captive portals. As in our entire UMN network.

How will this issue be resolved?

Could access the Web with Glass via mobile phone hotspot. How many students will have a hotspot?

Here's a good question, once we get students set up and able to access the Web: How should resources for writers be designed for access by mobile devices?

Glass gets hot sometimes and has to cool down before it's fully functional. Gets hotter when plugged directly into AC outline. Doesn't seem to get as hot when plugged into laptop USB.

Glass currently supports only 10 contacts. So I can't say "Okay Glass make a call to" just anyone.

We have an opportunity to test whether students are more likely to ask for help if all they have to do is ask for it--vs typing up a written request. It will be verbally generated text vs typed text. How

When speaking to Glass, Glass times out if there’s a pause in your speech; then you have a few seconds to cancel before it sends whatever you’ve said, whether it’s incomplete or not.

We’re learning about the challenges of wearable computing and will have to learn quite a bit more about the quirks of the device before we can put the device to work for instructional design purposes.

I'm trying to  buy 14 more pairs of Glass for educational uses. So far I've only been able to reach people at Google who don't know anything and can't put me in touch with anyone who knows anything.

I was able to buy one pair through the online channel everyone else uses but am hoping for a way to buy 14 more at a discount for higher ed.

Has anyone had a similar experience or broken through to buy in bulk?

Colleen Manchester, Amie Norden, and I presented at the Graduate and Professional Education Assembly at the University of Minnesota. We support Carlson School of Management honors thesis writers throughout their 18-month research and writing process using Moodle learning management with Google apps for education.
